Tired Tree biography
TIRED TREE began as a solo project by artist Mattias HOLMGREN.

To truly understand the purpose and direction of musical influences in Tired Tree we need to go back a few years to look at the musical journey.

Mattias was born 1978 in one of the northern towns in Sweden called Umeå. His parents sent him for a few sporadic piano lessons at the age of 10, but due to lack of interest in classical music he resigned after maybe 3-4 sessions, but continued playing a little now and then. Mattias later found interest in music in 1992 while starting up a band with a few friends, where he played the drums. The band was named BEYOND which later turned into EMBRACING before releasing it's first album. In 1995 the rumour had been spreading around town of this skilled drummer and the metal band Naglfar asked him to join them for their debut album "Vittra". After recording the album in the famous "Abyss studios" Mattias resigned from Naglfar to focus more on the songwriting of his own band EMBRACING.

The band recorded a demo called "Winterburn" which got them a deal with Invasion Records from Germany. Two albums were born out of the relationship, the debut "I bear the burden of time" in 1996 and "Dreams left behind" the following year -97. Both albums got great reviews in Metal Hammer and other big magazines. While recording "Dreams left behind" Mattias also took over the lead vocals of the band since the old vocalist Henrik had to leave.

The following years both guitarists of EMBRACING resigned and Mattias was left to decide what to do with the band. He chose to pick up the guitar himself, since he was always the mind behind the projects, writing most of the music and lyrics. The result was a demo called "Rift" which was then recorded with two new guitarists. Due to new influences like SYMPHONY X and DREAM THEATER the music was more progressive than the earlier albums.

Mattias did a two year study at a music-academy learning music theory, arrangement, improvisation and approaching orchestral, jazz and acoustic music.

While studying he was introduced to bands like Pat MATHENY, Alan PARSON, MARILLION, YES, CAMEL, STEELY DAN and the westcoast genre in general (read David Foster). He started to go back to his roots behind the piano and also wrote his first westcoast ballad called "My greatest rose", and the songs "Final Chime" and "The tired tree". They were all heavily inspired by the late westcoast and progressive rock influence...

3 stars TIRED TREE is a side-project from Swedish musician Mattias Holmgren. It's also one of the worst CDs I've heard. I'm sorry, but I just don't get what's going on here. Either Mattias is in the early stages of having a hot new girlfriend, or he has the worst taste in music. Matthias is known as the drummer for a well-known Swedish metal band(which I have never heard of), but apparently he also likes 80s Phil Collins. So, he took that radio-friendly AOR sound, mixed it with the blandest DREAM THEATER, and added loads of thin vocals. I hate being negative on someone's art and passion, but when a CD sells for $16 new consumers need honest reviews. This album would have been better off on mp3.com. While I can see buying this CD so you could tell your friends that you own the cheesiest album ever recorded(a novelty item), unless you are a huge fan of Phil Collin's pop music watch out.
Thanks to ProgLucky for the artist addition. and to Dean for the last updates
