Jim Sullivan biography
British guitar legend "Big" Sullivan with his psychedelic sitar project

"In 1965 Big Jim Sullivan took his first lesson on the Sitar from a Professor at a London College of Ethnic Music. Going to a music school must have been a novel idea as Big Jim had been playing guitar on sessions since 1957, resulting in his presence on more UK hits than anyone else. His tuition was also taken from a famous Indian player who had been studying for many years (the first two years in India are spent solely on the Tabla before they touch a Sitar) and gave Jim the necessary insight to be a creditable player. The result was Jim being asked to record even more sessions as the Sitar became a de rigeur instrument on virtually all mid 60's rock pop records. He taught Jimmy Page, took his Sitar over to George Harrison's Esher pad to enlighten the Beatle.

So we come to 1967 and Mercury Records decide to cash in on the raga craze and take from Big Jim an entire LPs worth of where Sitar met Rock. The contents are a perfect blend of late 60's pop with the Tabla & Sitar sound and arrangements."

3 stars The fashion that had been especially sent from the region in London as a center of the culture that had spread gradually in the latter half of the 1960's will have been one gorgeous exactly symbol. Flow to which music character in bands such as The Beatles and The Who derives. Or, the part that spread while absorbing the culture and information from other regions might be advanced without staying in music as various fashions.

The existence of Jim Sullaivan will be able to be enumerated as one person who supported the market of the music of Britain of the time of the latter half of the 60's when a variety of music characters in addition to the element of Beat Rock and POP began to gather gradually. Of course, his existence should have had a large influence on the music character that the band in Britain afterwards did as a guitar player in the session.

The music character that derived as a situation in which the music at this time was surrounded had absorbed very a variety of music characters. It has from the guitar in Sitar in this album and appears remarkably as zeal of substituted Jim Sullivan. He is actually said at this time that he created the session and music with various musicians with Jimmy Page. And, there is a theory said that it instructed Ritchie Blackmore on a young day in the base in playing the guitar, too. Jim Sullivan exactly contributes to the part of the dawn in the music at this time a lot.

It characterizes and the sound of Sitar and Beat Pop that centers on the flute and the guitar are developed about this album through the whole volume as for the collective impression. John Paul Jones, John McLaughlin, and Jimmy Page participate in the recording. Because the composition of the tune is a little short overall, the composition power of the tune might receive a little insufficient impression. However, the performance by Sitar that Jim Sullivan who was the guitar player did might be an album that has succeeded as a method of constructing and expressing the music character at which he should aim at this time. Height and the idea of the technology in the performance might be splendid though an impression a little near BGM is given. The sensibility that takes up tunes such as Procul Hurum, Donovan, and The Beatles has succeeded splendidly, too.

As for "She's Leaving Home", the melody of Sitar in close relation to the melody of a pastoral guitar is expressed well. The obbligati of a gentle flute to the flow that gives the relief twines. The part of the unison by the flute and Sitar is also good each other.

Sitar completely expresses the melody of the song in "Sunshine Superman". The player advances while giving the impression of Beat POP in union. Each sound supports the tune well. Solo of the percussion instrument and the flute also contributes to the tune.

"A Winter Shade Of Pale" shifts from the part of the introduction with the wind instrument to the melody of the song by Sitar. Part of Strings that supports performance. Or, the melody of the decoration with the glockenspiel and the wind instrument is also effective.

"Ltts" completely produces the flavor of the Indo music. Part where music scale of Arabic music is good. Or, support with the flute continues. Rhythm that percussion instrument that doesn't obstruct tune is never good. The tune completely creates one space.

A gentle melody of the flute and the sound of the guitar twine round "The Koan" well. Solo of the wind instrument twines round development advanced by the unison. And, Solo of the guitar by John McLaughlin appears perhaps. The melody of the sound and the theme that Tabla is good also expresses the tune well.

As for "Tallyman", the sound of the guitar processed with Fuzz and the rhythm of Rock are impressive. A bright melody of Sitar and the unison of the wind instrument are expressed well. The flute and Sitar decide the impression of the tune while emphasizing the rhythm of Rock.

"The Sitar And The Rose" demonstrates the taste of Sitar without reserve. The impression of the tune is decided while continuing the melody with expression of feelings. The melody with the flute constructs a good flow.

The part of a few psychedelic and POP exists together in "Translove Airways". Flow of sound of guitar that takes charge of flow of Strings and part of psychedelic. Sound of flute in close relation to line of Bass. It might be a tune that exactly draws the flow of Beat Rock.

The route of Indian music appears remarkably in "Within Without You". Part of construction of complete melody and music scale with Sitar. The performance that support with the flute and Tabla is completely suitable for the impression of the tune, too is done.

"Flower Power" draws out the taste of Indian music without reserve. The sound of Tabla and Sitar is complete. A good flow is constructed while continuing those routes. This tune also exactly creates one space.

The album shifts here to "Bonus Track". This sound source is a sound source that the label that is called "De Wolfe" on which it acts for independent production is requested from Jim Sullivan and can done. This sound source was a sound source that had been announced from this label as another album. It is a tune by the name of the group that is called "The London Studio Group" that performs the tune.

"The Pangeing Sullivan" is complete Jazz Rock. Jimmy Page might participate in this tune. The part of Chord of complete Jazz Rock with the vibraphone and the guitar will overwhelmingly have a wonderful flow. The sound of the organ and progressing the tune are perfect. The processing of the melody and Chord that unifies an anacatesthesia and a transparent feeling is perfect.

"Indian Dance No.2" starts by the melody of gentle Sitar. It is a performance very refined. The feature is to perform by giving a racial impression to the complete rhythm that the percussion instrument does.

As for "The Wild One", the impression of mods might be strong. The organ and the guitar advance in union with the Horn section. Music that contains the age done at that time is exactly progressed.

In "Romantic Scene No.1", the melody of Sitar with expression of feelings is a feature. The part where Indian music is good has been completely taken. An enchantment melody and the rhythm are expressed well.

"Pop Spot" is a tune that draws the flow of Beat Pop. It shifts from the development of the melody that is reminiscent of The Beatles to the part of the dash feeling. The melody of the guitar and the development of Chord might be refined.

The sound of the guitar processed with Fuzz and the atmosphere of psychedelic have occurred from "Viva La Tamla Motown" well. The taste of Beat Rock is exactly expressed. It is expressed well as progressing the tune that catches the age though Sitar doesn't appear.

It might be a valuable work where his taste was exactly expressed as an expression of music including the age that Jim Sullivan caught through the whole volume.
