Ion Dissonance biography
ION DISSONANCE was formed in 2001 in Montreal,Quebec by Antoine Lussier (guitars) and Sebastien Chaput (guitars),and play an interesting blend of progressive metal, math metal and metalcore. The line-up was soon completed with the addition of JF Richard (drums) ,Sebastien Painchaud (bass) and Gabriel McCaughry (vocals).
The band then recorded and released a promotional demo called ".357" in 2002 and shortly underwent a line-up change when bassist Sebastien Painchaud was replaced by Miguel Valade.Heavy touring as a support act soon followed.
ION DISSONANCE released their first full-length LP "Breathing is Irrelevant" in 2003 and continued to tour well into 2004.Another line-up change followed, with Miguel Valade being replaced by current bassist Xavier St-Laurent.They began recording their second album "Solace",which was released in 2005.
2006 saw vocalist Gabriel McCaughry leave the band for various reasons and he was replaced by Kevin McCaughey of the band SHAOLIN.
Often compared to bands like THE DILLINGER ESCAPE PLAN and MESHUGGAH,ION DISSONANCE are known for their technical riffs which are played one over another, groove-like drum patterns and a heavy atmosphere.
Highly recommended to all fans of heavy, extreme and complex progressive metal.

Ion Dissonance Tech/Extreme Prog Metal

— First review of this album —
4 stars This album again marks a shift in style for Ion Dissonance, probably also due to their then new label Century Media, usually focussed on generic deathcore. And indeed the band has now strapped on the obligatory 8-string guitars and utilises a heavily triggered drum sound. Luckily, the result is not as generic and boring as one may have feared. "Cursed" is a very heavy and aggressive record, which continues the humorously tinted titles and lyrics. In between the low-tuned shredding it contains some music that resists the simplicity of deathcore breakdowns and blastbeats and pays heed to the "Mathcore" label.

With very slick production it may still seem very chaotic and noisy in parts but that was surely intended. This shift in sound probably made them more accessible to the new-generation metal audience who cherish everything that bears the "-core" label and has low tuned guitars but I do not think that they have given up their identity for it. A brutal record that is surely not everyone's cup of tea but should not alienate fans of the band's sound on the previous two albums too much an makes a great addition to the varied ID-discography.

5 stars Brilliant prog-math/grind album. Brutality technicality and extreme dissonance as the title suggests. Solace is the coupe de gras of Ion Dissonance material. Just listen to the first two tracks and you will get a good idea of the album. Relentless and devastating.

4 stars VERRRRRRY different style of metal than their previous two albums. On Minus The Heard Ion Dissonance gave up the math/grind aspect and made more of a brutal metalcore album. I for one was very shocked and slightly disappointed but as far as metalcore albums go it is very well done. So 4 stars. A change of pace but still just as good in another genre.

4 stars Bruuuuuutal band. Not necessarily what most would consider prog. But regardless they play a very technical style of math/grind with heavy metalcore mixed in. If you appreciate extreme metal then at least give this a shot. For fans of Dillinger Escape Plan.

2 stars Ion Dissonance is another one of those technical, relentless metal/core bands. Like the rest of them, these guys can play, but they can't write. I can't get past one of these songs without the desire to switch records. It's obnoxious, tiresome music. There is not one riff, phrase, vocal line (it's a bunch of yelling as is typical of the genre's lower tier) that sticks with me. I love pedantic music; I can even love heavy music. This however is not something I can get into, and I don't see how many other people can enjoy this. The technicality is the only aspect that gets any consideration in their writing. That is not nearly enough to make a good record. For the time being, I'll give it two stars, because it is better than most standard metal and hardcore acts.
