Volta Do Mar biography
Volta Do Mar (not to confuse with The Mars Volta) took their name from the Portuguese phrase "turn of the sea," a line in a book by Jos Saramago. Bassists Jeff Wojtsiak and Mike Baldwin, guitarist Phil Taylor, and drummer Tony Ceraulo all started playing together in various combinations at an early age in Chicago. They started in earnest in 1998, with broad influences from jazz to death metal. Their intricate, jazzy math rock made its debut on a self-titled EP in 2001, followed, in the same year, by a full-length debut, At the Speed of Light or Day, later that year.

These four serious gentlemen seem to think that post-rock needs a healthy dose of prog-rock drama and technique; fortunately, they have the chops and creativity to make a potentially disastrous approach sound wonderful. Volta Do Mar keep listeners on the edge of their seats with bracingly abrupt dynamics and unconventional melodies that suggest more than a few King Crimson and Don Caballero LPs in the band members' collections. These dudes also wisely realize that singing is best left to the few gifted souls who can genuinely do it properly.

Volta Do Mar Post Rock/Math rock

Review by JTP88

4 stars What we've got here is the perfect mix of post-rock with math rock, well I'm not really a fan of math rock, I think it's too confusing and directionless, but I do like the idea of math rock, really quick music with strange time signatures constantly changing and complex structure, so what Volta Do Mar reach here is basically what I like in math rock, fast paced and melodic without all the confusion in the music, with beautiful post-rock moments.

If you are searching for beautiful math rock then make you sure you listen to this, from the beautiful acoustics of "The Sound Of Day" to the fragile vocals of "Lengua Pivo", from the absolutely delightful "Ransom Stoddard" to the hard math rocker "Rock For Nations", finishing in atmospheric beauty of "Sound After Day", this album deserves to be known by every post-rock/math rock fan.

Thanks to chamberry for the artist addition.
