Opus 3 biography
OPUS 3 is a young, talented power-trio from Chile that delivers an exciting type of instrumental heavy prog with lots of jazzy and experimental textures in the mix. The band cites RUSH, LTE and PRIMUS as major influences and that pretty much sums it up, but we can also notice unmistakable traces of KING CRIMSON, DON CABALLERO, IRON MAIDEN and modern jazz-rock in many passages of their repertoire. The combination of technical virtuosity and warmth is the essential asset of their musical offering, which in turns aims to deliver solid structures and well-defined compositional ideas. The resulting style makes them stand close to compatriot bands OCTOPUS and AUTÓMATA, to a degree.

OPUS 3 was originally founded by bassist Francisco DE BORJA (also in charge of writing the material), drummer Rodrigo CHAVARRÍA and guitarist Pablo MORALES in 2003, when they were studying at the Escuela de Música Moderna, in Santiago. Gonzalo GARCÍA eventually replaced MORALES and so, this line-up ended up recording their eponymous debut album, released in 2006.

3 stars How many all-instrumental, Heavy-Prog bands are there from Chile ? There are lots, and I think I have most of them. OPUS 3 are a young, talented trio who have a great future if this album is any indication.

"Leviatan" begins with some tasteful guitar before we get some crunch a minute in. Angular guitar after 3 minutes as it settles somewhat. Drums are prominant late. "Kairos" is where the bass really stands out for the first time. Even the guitar leads are more aggressive. Some huge bass 4 minutes in. "Opus 3" opens with what sounds like church bells in the distance as the guitar comes in grinding away. Love the guitar 2 minutes in. A fuller sound before 4 minutes.

"Bufon" is another mid-paced, guitar led track. Nice heavy bass too in this one, especially 2 1/2 minutes in. "Armagedon" is led by tasteful guitar melodies early before it kicks into gear before 2 minutes. "Ciclos" is more of the same really, but a little more laid back until 1 1/2 minutes in. "Creaturas De La Noche" is the longest track at over 11 minutes. I really like the bass 1 1/2 minutes in as the guitar plays over top. "Atila" is better. More energy at times. Check out the bass 2 minutes in !

Great start for this band. I'd love to hear more variety from these guys in the future. They're not yet in the same class as EXSIMIO or MAR DE ROBLES, but then who is ?

Thanks to Cesar Inca for the artist addition.
