Ciruelo Cilindrico biography
CIRUELO CILíNDRICO is a progressive metal band from Spain formed in 2002 by Itobal Medina (drums), Attmeixim Cárdenes (bass), Daniel Pérez (guitar) and Javier (guitar). During this period the band had a few changes in lineup but on 2003 the band settled with Itobal Medina, Attmeixim Cárdenes, Daniel Pérez, Anry Mederos (vocals, guitars) and Ancor Ramírez (guitars).

In November 2004 Ancor Ramírez was fired of the band and was replaced by Daniel Bautista. Following these events Daniel Pérez decided to part ways with the band so Anry Mederos started playing guitars apart from singing in the band. In June 2005 the band released their first EP entitled "Six Magical Bullets". In December 2007 the band released their first full length entitled "Gemini" and followed in 2008 by "Ciruelosis"; the bands second and final LP. Later in summer of the same year the band released the EP "C'est Fini" which was recorded without Attmeixim Cárdenes. After releasing the EP the band dissolved.

CIRUELO CILíNDRICO's sound could be described as a mix of progressive metal, with 70's hard rock and the 90's grunge music with some experimental twists.

All of their LP's and EP's including demos are free to download in their homepage.

2 stars Another free download album, I gather. It is ages since I got this album, but I guess it is still a free download.

Anyway......

Trying to describe the sound of this band is a bit difficult. They are somewhere between Radiohead (a large dosage), Iron Maiden and Nirvana. Add some unassuming shoe gazing vocals and you get this band...... somehow.

I reviewed one of their two EPs too and found little to appreciate there. The same goes for this, their latest album too. The Radiohead/Iron Maiden/Nirvana pastisj is featureless and is drudging along in the bottom of a valley. The music frankly remains me about one of the more barren mountain landscapes in Spain, where this band comes from, with it's barren sound. Electric guitars are well used here. Both metal heavy guitars and in a more restrained acoustic like fashion. The drums and bass is in the background, without adding much water to this barren desert. The dull, mumbling shoe gazing vocals also add sand to the desert. I guess this is called post rock. There are some good attempts here and there spread over this album. But most of this album barren and dull. I prefer a life in the mountains instead of this album, I am afraid. But the post rock fans out there should check this album out.

2 stars An album who opens with an Iron Maiden riff taken from one of their most classic songs is sure to get the blood boiling. If these ten seconds is a sample or just note-by-note recreation is something I do not know.

This free EP is also almost forty-five minutes long. That sounds like an album to me. Value for money is what you get, all this 0.2 cents it costs you in fees to the ISP to download this EP/LP. But maybe I do not get this joke. Anyway, I am just splitting hairs now. Over to the music.

The music is not too shabby. A mix of the worst of European heavy metal bands, some Iron Maiden, a lot of Faith No More, some space rock like Hawkwind, some Pink Floyd and a lot of local flavours. That's Spain, in other words. This album is not breaking into flamenco though. But the sound makes it pretty obvious that this band is from the other side of the Pyrenees. The riffs is mostly metal riffs with some space rock rhythms entangled. The vocals is pretty bad though. Thin and not on the top of the music at all. The music too lacks any real quality. This EP mostly works in the background and nothing here makes any impression. This EP is pretty OK and the musicians does their best. But it does not have any good songs at all. I am afraid this EP is a miss. I will listen to and review their other releases too. Let's hope this EP is their one and only miss.
