Mercury Rising biography
MERCURY RISING is a progressive metal band originating from the Baltimore, Maryland area. Their music, while firmly rooted in hard rock and progressive rock, shows complexity and various metal influences, thus being a progressive metal band.

Their debut album "Upon Deaf Ears" showed their potential as a progressive band, with a 9 minute closing epic that will appeal to progressive rock and metal fans. Their second album titled "Building Rome" perfected their formula, and was a very solid album, and is highly recommended.

They will appeal to fans of melodic progressive metal, and fans of RUSH, KING'S X, and even DREAM THEATER.

Mercury Rising Progressive Metal

4 stars "Upon Deaf Ears" is the debut full-length studio album by US progressive/power metal act Mercury Rising. The album was originally released through Dominion Records in 1994, but itīs probably the 1997 Noise Records re-release thatīs most readily available.

The band play a guitar/vocal driven progressive/US power metal with only limited use of keyboards. Acts like early Queensrĸche, Fates Warning, Lethal and Heir Apparent are valid references but Mercury Rising often cross into harder edged power/thrash territory too and Iīm reminded of acts like Sanctuary and Mystic Force when that happens. The latter style is best heard in the powerful power thrashy track "Halfway to Forever" while the more progressive side of the bandīs music is heard in tracks like the opener "Upon Deaf Ears", "Light to Grow" and especially in closing 9:15 minutes long "Where Fear Ends".

The band are very well playing but if I have to mention a slight issue it would be that lead vocalist Clarence Osborne occasionally lacks a bit of power. Itīs actually a bit odd because other times he sounds great. The sometimes unremarkable vocal lines/melodies probably also have something to do with this and the vocal production could be another issue. Most of the time the vocals sound great though. As touched upon the sound production features a couple of minor issues but all in all the sound suits the music well and overall I appreciate the production.

Iīm not sure how much success "Upon Deaf Ears" earned Mercury Rising, but my guess is not much. Had it been released just 5 years earlier things would have looked different for the band. In 1994 most progressive metal acts had included a keyboard player in the lineup as that was the big thing at that time and compared to that, Mercury Rising sound a bit old fashioned. Personally they play exactly the type of progressive metal that I enjoy the most so Iīm thrilled there are few keyboards on the album and overall "Upon Deaf Ears" is a quality release. A 3.5 - 4 start (75%) rating is deserved.

— First review of this album —
4 stars Mercury Rising is a prog metal band from USA with two albums under the belt. This is second one from 1998 named Building Rome. I must confess this was and is still after so many years after first listning a real surprise for me . A very strong and well crafted album , the musicianship is outstanding, the vocal parts are super, what else an album must have.Taken their influences from Fates Warning (Perfect symmetry era), Queensryche and even in places some Sieges Even elements are added, Mercury Rising release an album hard to forget if you are in this kind of music. Very talented band who for some resons never made it in prog metal circles, it's a shame because this is one of the best prog metal album of the '90's for sure. Well balanced album with a complex intrumental passages combined very well with outstanding vocal parts. I was simply blown away after I re listen and re discover this band after I've first listen the album when was relesed 11 years ago. Simply amazing, how is possible such a band with so many qualities to become so unknown is beyond me. Clarence Osborne vocal parts are simply amazing, not to mention the other musicians are top notch. This is almost forgotten tresure in prog metal world. All the pieces stands as very good to my ears, not a weak moment, Cathedral, the title track, Moment of Truth are examples how great this band is, quite better than the previous one, with a lot to offer. I higly recommended this band and specily this Building Rome album, they desearve a better view for sure. It's sad that they are so unknow and they disbanded a year after this relese, if you are a prog metal fan try this album worth every second. Almost a masterpiece of prog metal, desearve 4 stars, that means an excellent album to have in your collection.
