Dark Castle biography
DARK CASTLE are post metal group from the United States. The band is a duo whose sole two members are Rob Shaffer of the band INTO THE MOAT(drums, vocals, synth) and Stevie Floyd of CYSTIC DYSENTERY (guitar, keyboards, vocals).

DARK CASTLE independently released the elaborately packaged EP "Flight of Pegasus" in 2007.The duo signed with At A Loss Recordings and released their full-length debut "Spirited Migration" in 2009.

Having no bassist(they use synthesized, grinding notes to fill in the space between guitar and drums),the music has an incredibly full, rich sound for a group with so few members.DARK CASTLE play a mix of post metal, doom and stoner metal and will appeal to fans of band such as ISIS,PELICAN,SUNNO))) and EARTH.

Highly recommended!

4 stars From the fuzzy buzz, crushingly dark riff, and pounding drums that open this debut offering "Spirited Migration" from progressive sludge metal band Dark Castle, I had a feeling that I was in for a treat. I've had this album since it was released, and I listen to it quite frequently.

Dark Castle is unlike most prog-sludge metal bands in a few ways. Two members, one of which is a female guitarist and vocalist. Her guitar playing, though usually appropriately slow and sludgy, is also frequently breath taking. Most of this album makes usage of modes of various ethnic backgrounds, though I'm detecting mostly Spanish and Indian feels. Very unique in this particular brand of music. One track that especially caught me off-guard was the acoustic title track, which consists of gloomy flamenco picking and is quite beautiful and seriously adds to the feel of the album. The vocals from this female vocalist are deceptively harsh, so I give her a big thumbs up for being awesome and impressive through the album's duration.

In a genre that is basically defined by its slow tempo, it is kind of hard to come off as sounding technical, but Dark Castle does do their best to sound more technical than their contemporaries. This album is also very atmospheric in it's doomy darkness, and also quite heavy.

I highly recommend this for anyone in the fan base of sludge or doom metal looking for something that gives the genre an interesting spin.
