Voices of Omens
Rwake Experimental/Post Metal

Review by kluseba

2 stars Rwake play a strange mixture of doom metal with some sludge and black metal elements. They call themselves experimental but honestly said the overlong songs are quite redundant. A few atmospheric passages and acoustic parts awake some interest but apart but not enough to be called experimental or progressive. There are some addicting interludes and instrumental tracks with alien vocals, acoustic guitars and some floating moments. Nevertheless, almost all songs turn out to be blackened doom songs with weak random voices that roar, yell and scream random lyrics. It's a quite complicated and mixed sandwich with this band as they have some talent and good approaches but really don't know how to focus on and develop their strengths.

Each time I wanted to abandon on this album after boring stuff like the horrible sucker "Crooked Rivers", the band came along with some short and fairly interesting calm or atmospheric passages like in the more diversified "Of Grievous Abominations" and so I made it through the entire record but the enjoyable, original and gripping passages can be resumed to ten minutes on this one hour record.

There are way more addicting experimental black and doom metal bands out there that have a much better level in their first efforts than this band on its fourth strike. The cool band photos and the amusing cover artwork are pretty much the only outstanding things left in here and that's not enough to evolve. Maybe one day the band will awake and focus on its talents and be more atmospheric, calm and structured in the future. It will be a long way to the top though. But it's possible. As for this album, you really should avoid it and look for something else.

Rwake Experimental/Post Metal

4 stars "Rest" is the 5th full-length studio album by US (Little Rock, Arkansas) sludge metal act Rwake. The album was released in September 2011 by Relapse Records. Rwake had a regular and quite deserved breakthrough with "Voices Of Omens (2007)". An album that firmly put them on the southern sludge metal map.

..."Rest" continues the quite adventurous sludge metal style of itīs predecessor. The atmosphere is ridden with despair, the vocals are aggressive, raw and shouting (sometimes close to a black metal rasp) and the riffs heavier than heavy. There are six tracks on the 52:47 minutes long album and two of them are shorter intros/interludes. The remaining four tracks are all very long. Three of them exceed the 10 minute mark. There are a lot going on in those tracks though so they can easily bear the long playing time. Rwake succeed very well in incorporating acoustic and clean guitar sections into the tracks and those sections compliment the heavier distorted and sludgy riffing very well. An example is the 16:06 minutes long "The Culling", which starts with about 6 minutes of clean post rock/metal type guitar work before entering heavier territories. Itīs safe to say that Rwakeīs music is not for those who favor regular vers/chorus structures. The development in a track like "It Was Beautiful but Now Itīs Sour" tells that story pretty well.

"Rest" is overall a very impressive album by Rwake and it should ensure that the band are counted among the current elite of sludge metal acts. The album features a strong sound production, excellent musicianship, and maybe the most important thing, adventurous and powerful songwriting. I find it a highly recommendable release to those who like their sludge metal with a twist. A 4 - 4.5 star (85%) rating is fully deserved.

Rwake Experimental/Post Metal

Review by J-Man

4 stars Rwake is a unique sludge metal band hailing from Arkansas that I (unfortunately) had never heard of before now. Rest served as my introduction to this underground group of American metalheads, and I will declare without any hesitation that this made for one hell of an introduction. The doom-laden riffs parred by hardcore-influenced shouting vocals and highly experimental song structures makes Rest a difficult album to approach, but an absolute gem when it finally unleashes its genius upon the listener. The epic compositions and unbelievably emotional performances help round off this semi-conceptual album about the end of times, leaving us with one of the most impressive albums this year has to offer. Rwake has really crafted a masterpiece this time around, and I'd recommend Rest in a heartbeat to anybody who enjoys absolutely filthy sludge/doom metal with weird experimental and progressive overtones.

The music on Rest is actually quite difficult to describe. Rwake is firmly rooted in angst-ridden sludgy doom metal in the vein of Black Tusk, early Mastodon, and the like, but they also have a much more progressive, experimental, and psychedelic edge. All of the compositions (aside from two short intros) are exceptionally lengthy, and they often ride the border between repetitiveness and complexity. A few of the slow-tempo doom riffs are repeated for a lengthy amount of time, yet Rwake also manages to incorporate lots of quirky technical sections into most of their tracks. The epic songwriting usually alternates between melancholic, almost post rock styled, riffs and heavy hardcore-influenced sections, making for an emotionally demanding journey. Acoustic guitars even pervade the music here from time to time, especially in the very psychedelic and dreamy "The Culling". Rwake clearly dumped their hearts and souls into this album, and the sheer beauty of the riffs (or even the anger contained within the vocals) can put a huge emotional strain on the listener. Rest does often come across as extremely unsettling and sinister, and I think that the miserable atmosphere is ultimately what makes the album so excellent. If you're not willing to experience some of the most emotionally demanding music out there, then approach with caution.

Like most sludge metal bands, the main focus of Rwake isn't in the department of technically demanding musicianship, yet I get the feeling multiple times throughout Rest that these are some of the most impressive musicians in the genre. The vocals from "C.T." especially impress me. His shouted vocal style always comes across as emotionally involved and angry, suiting the compositions perfectly. All of the other musicians also do an excellent job, and their performances always come across as real and authentic. The raw and earthy production also helps emphasize all of the emotions that Rwake are trying to convey here.

Rest is an incredibly successful release from Rwake, and it's clear that they weren't just sitting around doing nothing for the last four years. This is one of the most inspired sludge metal albums out there, and I have a tough time finding any flaws contained within this exceptional effort. The angry downtuned riffs, melancholic atmospheres, and beautiful acoustic portions make this an emotional rollercoaster ride through the deepest depths of human comprehension and an absolutely essential purchase for those interested in the genre. 4.5 stars are very-well deserved in this case. If you've been holding off checking out Rwake, or if you've simply never heard of them, Rest is a terrific place to start listening.
