Cicala-Mvta biography
Cicala-Mvta (pronounced shikala moota) is a Japanese RIO/Avant-Prog band formed in 1994 by multi-instrumentalist Wataru Ōkuma (clarinet, bass clarinet, vocalsand also includes Yoshiyuki Kawaguchi (saxophone), Yoshiki Sakurai (guitar), Takerō Sakijima (tuba, recorder), Tatsuya Yoshida(drums, vocals), Keisuke Ōta (violin, vocals), Yoshiaki Satō (accordion), Yōichirō Kita (trumpet), Akiko Watanabe (trombone) and Miwazō Kogure (ching-dong, gorosu). This incredibly diverse brass/woodwinds based band incorporates Japanese Chindon (street music) with Klezmer, Jazz, folk, punk, noise and traditional music from various ethnic regions. Their name is Italian and taken from gravestone of the most famous street singer/songwriter in Japan before the 1920?s, Soeda Azembo. A man who, unable to speak his mind in fear of being thrown into prison, compared his inability to speak freely to having a cicala stuck in his throat, a ?mute Cicada.? Cicala-Mvta is a highly creative band and is recommended to fans of music at that moves at break neck speeds, such as Koenjihyakkei or Ruins.

4 stars What a strange and beautiful album! Debut release of Japanese band with Italian (?) name and even more strange music. You will hardly believe, but this album's compositions just return me back to my years I spent in Western Balkans!

No mistake - Japanese avant-jazz band playing Balkan folk and klezmer! Sound is real Japanese though - very precise and clear, very different from real Balkan gypsy street bands dirty sound. But level of authenticity is very high, it's far not a cheap imitation! Even more - band plays Balkan music not too far from original from one hand, but filling it with their free jazz high professional elements. As result, you can hear fantastic mix hi tech Balkan world free jazz!

Sound mix is excellent, and musicians , besides of some chamber elements, work hardly trying to build that unique atmosphere and energetic field so characteristic for Serbian brass festival in small mountain town of Guča.

It's difficult to classify this release - too much world fusion to be jazz recordings, too much free jazz and avant chamber for being world fusion. Doesn't matter - this music has such strong positive energy in it,that you just must listen to it!

Thanks to evolutionary_sleeper for the artist addition.
