Sun Travellers biography
Dutch based outfit SUN TRAVELLERS is an international band, which was formed by Italians Luca Giustiniani (guitars, bass) and MarcAntonio Spaventi (keyboards, drums), Swedish Paul Ehn (keyboards, vocals) and Scotsman Gordon Todd (vocals) in 2006. All four are engineers with an education in music technology, and it was while first recording for local artists and then later teaching in Audio and Web classes that the foursome started to develop and explore their own material.

Their debut album Excursions was released in the spring of 2010.

3 stars European engineers creating a good debut album!

A month ago I saw this band was included to the PA, and then I visited their website and felt really interested about their music. Fortunately, and thanks to the band's kindness I received a copy of their debut album entitled "Excursions". Sun Travellers are a band that was formed in 2006 by two Italian guys, a Swedish and a Scottish. All of them are experts with a considerable experience in musical technology, they all are engineers who gathered together in order to create some nice music. So after some years, they finally released Excursions, which features ten songs and a total time of forty- one minutes. This album was recorded in Amsterdam between January 2009 and February 2010.

The album kicks off with "A Thousand Stars". Since the very first seconds the music sounds comfortable, there are nice guitars and good synth effects. Seconds later vocals appear with a soft tone and the music keeps that calm and friendly sound. I like a lot the guitar that appears here and there, creating a very nice atmosphere. Great first song!

Next one is "Calypso", with nice drums and guitars that remind me to some 70s underground bands, in moments sounds like a jam, it may have been one, I don't really know. This is an instrumental song that can be enjoyable anytime, due to its fresh and gentle sound.

"Shades of Madness" is an excellent piece. The structure seems to be simple, but with all the arrangements the song becomes rich, vast of sounds. Again, I like a lot the guitar work, especially the solo at the end. What I don't like is that the solo (and the song) finishes all of a sudden, when I believe it could have lasted at least a couple of minutes more, they could have exploded more this song.

With its six minutes, "Skywalker" is the longest song of this album, and starts with a warm sound created by a great slice guitar, drums and electric guitar. Later the song rhythm changes and vocals appear, the sound is in moments really catchy, like an alternative rock song. What I like the most is the guitar work, I know I have said that earlier in this review, but it really caught my attention.

"Insomnia Part 1" is like an interlude, a short song with acoustic guitars and some spoken word as background. The following track is "Miss Escapade" which follows the same acoustic path as its predecessor, but here vocals appear and give a special flavor. Anyway, in my opinion, as the song structure is the same, in moments I felt bored, though I have to say that the final minute where the guitar solo appears is pretty nice.

"Spirit Dance" is without a doubt my favorite track here. The bass sound is excellent and that nervous and intriguing atmosphere made me open my mind and imagine things. There is a brief moment where just the sound of air reigns, but seconds later the song turns again adventurous, I love the synth effects, some kind of spacey ambient accompanied by an excellent electric guitar. I may be contradicting myself, but this song (as the previous one) has a repetitive structure, but this time instead of being bored, I was really excited.

However, with "Mirrors" that comfortable sensation of calm, as in the first track returns. Vocals reappear but this time with some kind of echo that make them sound far. This is a nice track, but no what I would call their best. "Company Man" has a very tranquil mood, sounding even like a ballad. A couple of minutes later the song becomes more interesting and emotional.

The album finishes with the second part of "Insomnia", an even shorter piece with acoustic guitar and some percussion, just the last minute.

It is a nice debut from these talented guys, however, in moments I felt they could explore more and create more complex pieces. There are highs and lows, but in the end I am happy with "Excursions" and I am looking forward to hear their second album, their second excursion maybe. My final grade will be three stars.

Enjoy it!

Thanks to windhawk for the artist addition.
