Screaming Headless Torsos biography
SCREAMING HEADLESS TORSOS are New York-based avant/funk/jazz-rock-fusion group, formed in 1989. The band is a brainchild of guitar virtuoso David 'Fuze' FIUCZYNSKI; the other members being vocalist Dean BOWMAN, bassist Fima EPHRON, percussionist Daniel SADOWNICK, drumer JoJo MAYER (replace by Gene LAKE in 2001).
Bowman took a hiatus after 1996; Freedom BREMNER jumped the band wagon. Currently both Bremner and a new member Ahmed BEST are fronting the band (rap and singing duties). The current bassist are David GINYARD/Steve JENKINS and Scoota WARNER is on drums. Notable guest musicians are cellist Rufus CAPPADOCIA and saxophonist Mark SHIM.

The band released a handful of highly acclaimed studio and live albums so far, including a live DVD album.

The music of SCREAMING HEADLESS TORSOS is innovative, spastic fusion, blending elements from hip-hop, heavy-riffing punk, reggae, hard-boiled funk, avangarde music and Miles Davis' jazz rock period.

Review by marcobrusa

4 stars Great sounding album with interesting mixture of funk, jazz, rock and avant-garde. Better said, i think this is funk with rocky guitars, crazy vocals and fusion moments with a touch of experimentation. The rhythm section is super groovy and the guitar work is eccentric, many times like Discipline (KC) and sometimes indescribable and absolutely original. When I heard this album for the first time I thought it was too experimental to be considered just a funk album despite the catchy groovieness it has. It was a good idea to add Screaming Headless Torsos to Progarchives i guess (I only heard this album by them, though). Plus, I know Fiuczynski from Hiromi's Time Control (he did a great job in that album too). Is this progressive? I don't know, but it is a fusion of genres and it is very original and sounds awesome! 3.75/5

4 stars They are back after a nine year hiatus! Some personnel changes were made since: Freedom Bremner is the new singer in place of Dean Bowman Who left the band soon after their last tour in 2006! On drums still we got Gene Lake and Daniel Sadownick doing his job on percussions yet. David Ginyard is the new guy on bass. The song quality is absolutely awesome, no filler tracks here! I am not going wrong saying that this album is probably their best! The Interplay is just mindblowing, the songwriting is soulful and inspiring and the production is top notch! Highlights are"Wizard of Woo" with its continuous Time-Signature Changes, "Field of Light" and "With You" with their strong and articulate melodies. If you like Jazz-Rock music with Hard, Funk, Metal, Hip-Pop elements and relevant Zappa/Hendrix/Crimson strong influences, this record is made for you! One of Top Ten 2014 records, in my humble opinion!
Thanks to clarke2001 for the artist addition.
