Vezhlivy Otkaz biography
Aka as "Polite Refusal"

Founded in Moscow, Russia in 1985 - Still active as of 2017

The band was formed still in last years of Soviet Union existence. First concert was played in 1985, during 1985-1986 band became known around Moscow by its underground concerts. With their ironic lyrics and pseudo-classical/jazzy arrangements they stayed aside of main stream of Soviet underground rock-rebels. In 1986 they recorded their first album "Opera" (on cassette).

After few line up changes band had met the ?Perestroika? playing on big stages (they became accessible for Western musicians from that time) with Lindesy Cooper,Fred Frith's Keep The Dog,Peter Hammil and others. Main evidence of "Soviet period" in band?s music was so-called "White Vinyl" album, released still on Soviet state "Melodya" label.

Band's musical direction in 1989 was changed to more self-closed aesthetics, and soon instead of singing lyrics they switched to wordless vocals, touring with their new program around Europe. After the interest to post-Perestroika fashion was decreased, band returned back to Moscow, where found their listener between avant-garde fans.

From mid 90s band regularly plays in few local Moscow clubs and time to time releases albums.

3 stars My only other album by this Russian band is from 1990(20 years earlier) called "Ethnic Experiences". A four piece back then, they are a six piece here with violin, trumpet and flute being the new flavours of sound. A lot more energy here but we also get those traditional sounding, folky excursions. This is mostly led by the acoustic guitar, piano and trumpet and is very much a hit and miss affair. We get eleven tracks worth over 53 minutes. Russian vocals once again and they are not pleasant.

If this is Russia's best Avant band then this just shows how far behind the West they still are. And yes my age and world view mean I'm still in the cold war as far as this nation goes. I respect VESPERO though, and their musical legacy. So this is quite different from their earlier album "Ethnic Experiences" but not any better.

3 stars VEZHLIVY OTKAZ or POLITE REFUSAL were formed in Russia in 1985 and they are into double digits as far as studio albums go. The liner notes and the vocals are all in Russian, and they are a four piece here with their fourth studio album "Ethnic Experiences" from 1990. We get the usual bass, guitar/vocals, drums and keyboards. Their first two releases were self-released, then that third record was released on the Russia state label before "Ethnic Experiences" got released on a Finnish record label. Interesting that this whole album was re-recorded by the band as they were unhappy with the original. That was released in 1994.

Not much in the way of avant in my opinion, in fact it's quite the laid back album, sparse even. I was left wanting more. Of the eight tracks my favourite by far is "Overture" that seventh track. Just the way it builds and the bass stands out here. The fifth tune "Pessimistic Reggae" was not included in the re-recording of this album, so I guess they didn't like it either. Maybe that fourth song is the closest to avant with the humerous and unusual sounding vocals. I must admit this is confusing, maybe frustrating with the Russian language and liner notes. Interesting that their most recent release is called "War Songs" from 2017 where they are at their most avant, deconstructing traditional Russian music including marching band stuff. Here? Well this is barely 3 stars and far from adventerous.

5 stars We've been waiting a while for the return of the wonderful Vezhlivy Otkaz. It's been 7 years since their excellent Geese and Swans released in 2010. One of my favorite records of the last 10 years. Whereas that album had a melancholy feel brought to their progression towards a more avant sound, this album is more angular and strident while still becoming more avant. The vocals are sparser than previously but the signature phrasing lyrically & musically are very recognizable.

The core of the band has been remarkably consistent with Roman Suslov (guitar, vocals), Dmitry Shumilov (bass), Andrey Solovyev (trumpet) & Mikhail Mitin (drums) have been in the band since 1989. Other members of this line up, Maxim Trefan (grand piano), Pavel Karmanov (grand piano), Sergey Ryzhenko (violin), Pavel Tonkovid (sax), have all appeared in previous versions of the band.

The band certainly benefits from having the expanded line-up with violin, sax & trumpet key parts of their sound. They certainly sound like a very tight band and this material benefits from having been played live for a period of time. For fans of the band this is a great album with a continued development of their sound and a bunch of great tunes. Highly recommended for fans of avant edgy folk.

5 stars Avant-prog generally doesn't cross with prog folk, but Polite Refusal seemingly took that name to show how little they care for such a barrier. This some rather dour, brooding folk worthy of Russia that does not shy away from proggy, experimental leanings. It makes for a fascinating listen, and gives Univers Zero's work a run for its money in terms of darkness... and quality. There is a good variety of instruments and instrumentation, the shadows permeate the music in the best way, and boy, can the band play. Thus far the avant-prog highlight for the 2010's, and won't be conceding that position easily, let alone ever fall out of my favour. Highly recommended to avantheads and adventurous folk aficionados.

5 stars The most recent release by Vezhlivyj Otkaz (Polite Refusal) is probably their most avant and accomplished release. The band has been around since the mid 80's but have been pretty much unknown outside of Russia. They started out as a punk / ska band and have continually evolved over the years to a dark edgy folky avant band that performs these days. Those of us in the West have AltrOck to thank for distributing these albums that were previously unavailable. The band is primarily an outlet for Roman Suslov the guitarist and vocalist.

The line-up for Geese & Swans consists of Roman Suslov / acoustic guitars, vocals, Dmitry Shumilov / acoustic bass guitar, double bass, vocals, Pavel Karmanov / grand piano, flute, Sergey Ryzhenko / electric violin, vocals, Andrej Soloviev / trumpet, Mikhail Mitin / drums, percussion.

The songs are of the short 3 to 7 minute variety and are generally lyrically based with guitar accented by wind and keys. Outstanding release and highly recommended.

Thanks to snobb for the artist addition. and to Quinino for the last updates
