Tantra biography
Formed in Mar de Plata in the year 2004, the Argentinean instrumental ensemble TANTRA was born in a basement full of young musicians eager to create music that could be fresh and dark at the same time. The road of psychedelic prog was the choice taken by these young lads in order to make this idea real. The band?s debut release was a demo EP entitled "Horas", comprising three tracks recorded in May of 2006: it was available via free downloading in the Internet for some time.

By then, the band had accomplished a loyal following in the arena of experimental rock, both in their native city and in bigger venues such as the ones in Buenos Aires and La Plata, where they frequently shared bills with other big Argentinean avant-rock names such as HONDURAS LIBREGRUPO, EL FESTIVAL DE LOS VIAJES, LUZPARÍS, PEZ, POSEIDÓTICA and many others. Many of these gigs were multimedia events where music was only a part of the whole picture. Indeed, TANTRA has always been a band capable of enriching its sound in many creative ways, and no doubt these events were highly influential during their maturing process. And so, the time came when TANTRA decided that it was time for a full-fledged album to be released, which would eventually become "Satori", the proper debut release. This album's repertoire was recorded in various sessions between June of 2009 and February of 2010, a magical display of psychedelic rock that paid homage to the classics of experimental progressive rock from the 70s while defining a particular refurbishment to the resulting sound that keeps it from becoming dated. Hopefully, there will be more albums by TANTRA in the near future, since "Satori" is an awesome testimony of the genius that exists in contemporary prog rock from South America.

3 stars Interesting debut by this Argentinian psych/space band. First of all, TANTRA is one of those rare crews featuring a female drummer. But what makes it attractive especially is the carefully worked out song collection. For example the opener Einführung comes entitled in German ... and ambient floating - so this is an intro which obviously resembles the Kosmische Musik tradition offered by the likes of Tangerine Dream and similar. This transforms into the short space rocker Niño De Cobre when all the band members finally participate.

Like on El Lenguaje Es Un Virus Del Espacio Exterior keyboard/synth and guitar are playfully swirling around each other in general - El Emisario for example appears with Ozric Tentacles references. During the extended jam Bajo Tierra Jupi Medvescig's fuzzy guitar is brought to the fore in particular. Here we have a mellow spacey intro and outro including nice flute and sax contributions, predominantly this groooooves though and the guitars assume control overall.

The drum playing sometimes appeals to be uninspired, but on the other hand this stoic behaviour has a large share in the special TANTRA ambience. It only needs some time to acquire a taste for this stuff really ... but then you can imagine a collective with proper interaction working here - solos as such are not provided, hence this sounds compact overall, featuring nice grooves with hypnotic and repetitve character, where they reserve two longer jams to close the album. 3.5 stars so far as we can expect more challenging stuff from this band.

Thanks to cesar inca for the artist addition.
