Ave Sangria picture
Ave Sangria biography
Founded in Recife, Brazil in 1969 as "Tamarineira Village" - Disbanded in 1982 - Reformed in 2009

The northern Brazilian band AVE SANGRIA began as the TAMARINEIRA VILLAGE around 1969 but were renamed before releasing their only album in the mid-seventies.

The band's music includes a unique blend of acoustic, ethnic instrumentation and percussion, electric and sometimes fuzzed guitar, disjointed rhythms and what can only be characterized as a glam-rock persona consisting of outrageous dress and makeup, exaggerated stage movements and often falsetto vocals.

Ave Sangria
Ave Sangria Prog Folk

Review by Warthur

5 stars A gem of Brazilian psychedelic hippy folk-rock. At points it seems a little reminiscent of the folkier moments in David Bowie's early discography, but such influences are quickly mastered and integrated into a distinctly Brazilian take on the general style. The use of keyboards and synthesisers are for the most part understated but give a refreshing twist to proceedings. Had this emerged in, say, California in the 1960s people would have been all over it; as it stood, Ave Sangria don't seem to have gained much traction outside of Brazil, which is a shame because this is an excellent example of its particular style.

Ave Sangria Prog Folk

5 stars Marco Polo (vocalist) says in recent interview, while praising and thanking the new generation of fans that permit Ave Sangria to continue touring and presenting in important festivals nowadays in Brazil that this generational lap was something trully important on themselves, showing that the conservatives in the 70's were, after all, wrong.

Hearing to "Perfumes Y Baratchos", I couldnt agree more. AVE SANGIRA made themselves in the way they could, managing to self promote the band, putting their artworks themselves in the towns they're gonna to present and trying to escape the police - who would try to cancel the concert in any way, mainly just for fun, to ruin the gathering of "leftists", "hippies", and so on...

This album is a gift for those who follow tha band since the begning and to the new generation of fans (as I guess I am). The quality of the sound is surprinsingly good, given the conditions of the times, and cointains several tracks not present in their debut. Aditionally, great improvisations and instrumental passages shows the quality of this musicians (almost no one continue being a musician). Epics like "Vento VEm" e "Geórgia a Carniceira" goes along with the great and shorts "Grande Lua" and "Sob o Sol de Satã". A great presentation, regarded by the band itself one of their bests, that encapsulates the seventies and deliver to you with what nostalgy have best.

I wish I were there.

5 Stars.

5 stars "Nada de novo no front/ E na retaguarda também/ Tudo normal desde ontem/ Quando houve sol e alguém/ Cantou... yê, yêi.."

Probably the favorite among the cult following of brazilian prog-heads, psychdelic and even modern hippies. AVE SANGRIA are among the various groups of Brazil that was not able to make a carrier out of music (sadly). Their history is a very interesting one: from self-financing and almost paying to play in places since the persecution of the right-wing dictadorship (thanks, 'murica), one after the other, is a miracle that they actually managed to record an album.

Their sound is more psychdelic than folk. However, the traditional music made a obvious appearence. I have a taste for successful mix of acid guitar with folk arrangements and Ave Sangria sure can do it. From "frevo" to LSD and back, we do have to praise artists who can make such good music, invade the imaginary of the young while escape (or try to) from all adversity to find something new in the front.

4.5 stars rounded to 5.

Thanks to ClemofNazareth for the artist addition. and to Quinino for the last updates
