Scaramouche biography
This is a one album German band, with the membership consisting of Johannes Hofmann on keyboards, Martin Hofmann on bass, Tommy Weber on guitars, Robby Stein on drums, and Holger Funk on lead vocals (with Julia Wollny contributing some backup vocals). The name (for the group and the 1981 album) comes from the classic Italian Commedia dell'Arte character, created by Tibor Fiorillo.

The vocals are in English, and the influence does not stop with language. There are also comparisons to Genesis, Yes, and Pink Floyd. Other major influences are Grobschnitt and Machiavel. The music is primarily symphonic, but manages to incorporate conventional rock. Blues, rock, pop, and even funk elements are added to the mix.

They are hailed for the tight, skillful instrumentals, and vocal harmonies. Recommended for fans of Grobschnitt and Machiavel.

2 stars Do you know that that disk type that when begins to play gives the clear impression that it is an excellent work, and what when finish you ask " what happened in the midlle tracks of the albun? ".This is the case of the sef-titled albun of the German band "SCARAMOUCHE." First Track "Cloud in The Sky" begins with a riff where the trio bass/guitar/drums leaves amazed even the listener most cautious, such the originality of the same, when sundenly emerge a theme led by the keyboards (hammond-organ & piano-electric) and following by strident vocals that in certain moments it receives the refined aid of VOCCODER and the track proceeds with force and a progressive atmosphere in the line of YES, GENESIS and something of the musicality of QUEEN. Already starting from the second track the quality of the music decrease almost declines to the point of transforming something that had a beginning that overpowering, for something repetitive, nor a little innovative and in a style that is not exactly that to call progressive. Only in the last track and that the band retakes the creativity and the shine of the initial track For that reason, in spite of two mentioned excellent Tracks, my rate isonly 2 Stars.

3 stars This german band Scaramouche release only one album in 1981, obscure and almost forgotten by many prog conoseurs. The music of this band is influenced by Machiavel, Styx, Queen here and there and Ambrosia or UK, I can't find any similarity with Yes for example as is said in the description of the band. Scaramouche is more towards pop prog than the symphonic prog of Yes or Genesis. Of course they combined very well that pop prog with symphonic elements, but is more of a pop orientated band. Anyway this album is good and has some very fine pieces like the opening track - the best from here - A cloud in the sky - who remainds me of UK (Danger money era), great drumming and excellent key passages, the rest are ok , worth listning from time to time. Not very much to add, the music is pleasent most of the time but sometimes without pashion and inspiration. While i can't recommended this selftitled album, i can say worth investigate at least once if you are a prog lover. 3 stars for Scaramouche

1 stars Take some of the phrasings of mid 70s Queen and Styx without any of their compositional or arranging talents and you get an idea of what Scaramouche is about. That is, at best this CD is marginally symphonic progressive, but every track is so forgettable that it doesn't really matter. At first it sounds like the closer, "Isn't it Real" might qualify for exit out of the morass, but it's only close to acceptable.

This is as good an example as any of what happens when a band has influences without inspiration. While the Musea and Garden of Delights catalogues are bursting with one-album groups that deserved more, Scaramouche provides an example of a band that made one album too many.

4 stars This is a very good, somewhat obscure album. The vocals are in English. The singer sounds a little like a subdued version of the singer from the Scorpions. He has a very good voice. The songs have a varied style. There are plenty of symphonic moments. There are some more mainstream rock moments, and even a jazzy feel on 'Crentcantoe', and a blusey feel on some others. The songs are very well written and performed. The sound production is very good. It is not complex progressive music. It is not long epic tracks. It is very good songs performed with a progressive edge. G.
