Memento Waltz biography
MEMENTO WALTZ was formed in Tempio Pausania, Italy in 1994. the initial line-up consisted of Giuseppe DEIANNA (bass), Gabrielle MACIOCCO (drums), Livio POIER (guitars) Antonio MUREDDU (guitars) and Tore MUREDDU (vocals). Since its beginnings, the band has evolved its sound from heavy metal to a mix of progressive metal with psychedelic melodies, dark atmospheres and polyrhythmic riffs. Stefano LANGIU replaced Antonio MUREDDU on guitars in 1997, but only for a year, and since then the band continues as a quartet. Their first demo came in 1999, entitled 'Moon's Valley', followed by their second 'Paralleles Minds' in 2002. Their first EP 'Overcoming' was released in 2005 and in the same year the band parted ways with vocalist Tore MUREDDU, only to be replaced in 2006 by Lord GOBLIN (RED WARLOCK, ex-HOLY MARTYR). In 2008 the band recorded a two-track demo entitled 'Brain Journey' but was never released. 2010 saw the released of their second EP ''Antithesis of Time'' with Marco PIU on vocals. With the same line-up, September 2013 finally sees the self-release of the band's full 7-track debut ''Division by Zero''.

The band cites influences from KING CRIMSON, ARK, WATCHTOWER, SPIRAL ARCHITECT and jazz music. Not surprisingly, their sound resembles also to PSYCHOTIC WALTZ and their lyrical themes span around mind states, psychedelia, sci-fi and technology.

3 stars Excellent new progressive metal band from Italy named Memento Waltz with their debut Division by zero released in 2013. Well, what was clear from the beggining for me,, was that the musicians can handle very easely the instruments giving to the listner a wall of sounds full of intresting passages. Clearly influenced and similar with Fates Warning, Spiral Architect, Linear Sphere, Watchtower - these italians proved right from the beggining that they mean bussines in this field. Lots of tempo changes, complicated arrangements, the bass works is impressive most of the time, competent drumer, some good towards great guitar erobics and a powerful vocalist makes memento Waltz a band to watch in the future. All pieces stands as good no really weak moment here, the only complain I can find is the vocalist, who is far from being bad, but is nothing special for me and because of that he drags little bit the overall enjoyment of the album. Otherwise technicaly and musicaly speaking Memento Waltz is awesome at best. 3.5 stars is best I can give, 3 stars but rounded up for the great musicinship. Nice art work and all, CD available at cdbaby.

4 stars "Division by Zero" is the debut full-length studio album by Italian, Tempio Pausania, Sardinia based progressive metal act Memento Waltz. The album is a self-released affair released in September 2013. Even though "Division by Zero" is the bandīs debut album, they are actually quite a seasoned act, having existed since 1994. They released both demos and a couple of EPs before this release. The latest being the "Antithesis of Time (2010)" EP, which is a release that showed great promise.

Stylistically Memento Waltz play technical/progressive metal in the vein of acts like Spiral Architect, Twisted Into Form, Zero Hour, Sieges Even, Watchtower and when they are most jazzy Cynic. They play music on a very high technical level with fusion influenced drumming, loads of tempo and time signature changes, blistering jazz/fusion tinged solo work and a versatile vocalist who can sing high notes but also more raw type vocals. At times the vocals actually give off a US power metal vibe even though the vocal melodies are not anthemic in style. The tracks are generally complex in structure and there is a lot of focus on technical playing, but not solely as there are also quite a few atmospheric parts on the album. Thereīs even an ambient part featured in "Mechdreamer" and a track like "A New Beginning" is also quite atmospheric.

"Division by Zero" is well produced and overall Memento Waltz have definitely taken the right step forward with their music. The complexity of the tracks ensure longivity and even though the vocal melodies might not be instantly memorable, repeated listens reveal a lot of intriguing details in that department too. I could mention several highlights like the powerful and varied opening track "Omicron" or the jazzy "Europa (Jupiter II)", but I think "Division by Zero" deserves to be listened to as a whole. Sometimes the band go a bit overboard with their progressive ideas instead of focusing on catchiness and flow (like the slap bass part in "Europa (Jupiter II)") but thatīs a minor issue and probably not a problem to most progressive metal listeners. A 3.5 - 4 star (75%) rating is deserved.

4 stars "Antithesis of Time" is an EP release by Italian progressive metal act Memento Waltz. The EP is a self-released affair, released in October 2010. While Memento Waltz have yet to release a debut full-length studio album (one is according to the band in the making as we speak though), the band are not new to the scene, having existed since 1994.

...and itīs audible from the get go, that Memento Waltz are seasoned musicians. They play a technical style of progressive metal not far from the sound of acts like Spiral Architect and Twisted Into Form, and they play that style to perfection. Weīre talking musicianship on an extremely high level. Fusion influenced drumming, odd time signatures and a varied and skillfully executed vocal style are some of the ingredients on "Antithesis of Time". Lead vocalist Marco Piu is a versatile vocalist and masters quite a few different vocal styles, sometimes sounding slightly like Bruce Dickinson (Iron Maiden) or Warrel Dane (Sancturary, Nevermore) but also occasionally adding more extreme vocal styles into the mix.

The five tracks on the 30:54 minutes long EP takes us through a technical/progressive journey with a twisted nightmarish atmosphere. For a progressive metal act, Memento Waltz are definitely on the darker side of the fence along with acts like Watchtower, Psychotic Waltz and Zero Hour.

Considering the fact that the EP is self-produced in the bandīs own studio, the sound production is very professional and well sounding.

"Antithesis of Time" display a band in great form. The music is not only performed with great skill, but the tracks are structurally challenging and quite demanding, which should be a treat to fans of the more technical part of the progressive metal genre. Iīm quite impressed and a 3.5 - 4 star (75%) rating is deserved. Now give us that debut album!
