Arabesque biography
ARABESQUE is a progressive metal band from Limburg, Netherlands, formed in late 1989 by by Joop WOLTERS (guitars), Marc VAN MIERLO (drums) and Barend TROMP (bass) who started off as an instrumental trio. Initially rehearsing intensively and playing a mix of hard rock with jazz and symphonic, the band released in April 19992 its first demo tape, entitled ''Pistache Express'', which was very well received by the press. Their change of style to heavier forms became apparent in their second demo ''Paragraph'' which was recorded by ex-VENGEANCE member Oscar Holleman in February 1994, finding good press response once again. This led to many offers for record deals, with ARABESQUE choosing Shark Records. They recorded their instrumental debut ''Beyond the Veil'' in 1994 in Gelsenkirchen with producer Wolfgang Stach (ELEGY, CHANNEL ZERO, SINISTER). Following the recordings, the band played with LEE FIRKINS, JENNIFER BATTEN and KINGDOME COME among others.

When they decided to add vocals to their sound, female singer Nicole DE SERIERE DU BIZOURNET stood out from the crowd, joining the band in late 1996. In March 1997 they had recorded four new tracks but the contract with Shark records expired. The next major event in the band was the departure of TROMP in early 1998 due to lack of time and was replaced with Frank DE GROOT, with whom the band started performing live again with bands such as ARENA, STATUS QUO, LIFE OF AGONY, MALMSTEEN. In August 1998 the demo CD ''Naked'' was recorded, completing the recordings with the addition of keyboardist Thijs CUPPEN. More shows and competitions followed for the next two years, seeing the band playing live with DREAM THEATER, STEVE LUKATHER, SPOCKS BEARD, JOE SATRIANI, VANDEN PLAS etc. CUPPEN was replaced in 2000 by Rene UBACHS and Katja SALEMI replaced Nicole on a temporary basis. Winning the Benelux ProgPower-contest meant that they would be playing at ProgPower 2000 in November of that same year, together with participants such as OPETH, EVERON, AFTER FOREVER, SPIRALARCHITECT, EVERGREY etc; Nicole returned in July and together they continued as a 6-piece.

In April 2002 the band signed a record deal with Lion Music and the album ''The Union'' was released in July 2002. The following January saw DE SERRIERE DU BIZOURNET leaving the band for personal reasons so they continue as a 5-member band. Since 2004 there are no updates to the activity of the band.

Their sound is a mixture of progressive metal, heavy ...

— First review of this album —
3 stars Arabesque is a progressive metal band from Holland formed around Joop Wolters, a great guitarist who is the heart of this band and one of the main composers. The band released only 2 albums and then diseppeared into oblivion, Joop begun a solo career and colaborations with other bands from prog metal zone and the othe rmusicians I really don't know exactly in what way they took after disbanding Arabesque in late 2003. This is theier second offer from 2002 named The union issued at already famous label Lion Music (the owner being no one else then Lars Eric Mattson). So what we have here is a great prog metal album whwere are presented dual dual lead vocalists, both femal singer and very good Katja Salemi and Nicole de Seriere du Bizournet. The music is quite complicated in many parts, rich arrangements, twisted moves, breaks and very solid musicianship on every tune. The instrumental passages are heavy progressive, melodic and very well executed with plenty of excellent interludes between musicians, in places remind me of Dream Theater but they are not a copy for sure. Powerful and inventiv moments are on almost every tune, the most great ones are to me, the opening track Freaking,Captured, the grovvy and super instrumental Instant Daydream and the beautiful heal me, all of those pieces shows a mature work where beseides instrumental passges, the dual lead singer are excellent, really strong powerful female voices I can ever hear on a prog metal album, very complex chord changes , but both handle very good . Rene Ubachs the keybordist has some intristing parts, from more slow ones to a more elaboretaed and full of intelligent manuvres, simply combined with the guitar and the rest is briliant, the high point is on the instrumental Instant daydream. In the end a recommended progressive metal album for anyone intrested in this kind of music, is a powerfull , passionate release full of excellent moments, kinda underrated in many places I saw this album, who needs a far more wider and better view.3.5 stars, not a masterpiece that for sure, but well done, produce and performed prog metal album. I really like it.
