NEXT TO NONE is a Progressive Metal band based out of Lehigh Valley, Pennsylvania featuring Max PORTNOY on drums, Ryland HOLLAND on guitar, Kris RANK on bass, and Thomas CUCE on keyboards and lead vocals. At the ages of only 12 and 13, the boys began writing their own music and performing live around the area. About a year later they went into the studio to record their first 3-song self titled EP. At that point they really started to promote themselves through social media and playing live shows around the Pennsylvania area. Selling over 500 discs on their own and quickly gaining experience playing live and building an audience. They released a video for their song Fortune Cookie (featuring cameos from Anthrax, Dee Snider, Chris Jericho and the hosts of That Metal Show). They have continued to promote themselves through social media gaining over 70,000 views on You Tube and over 15,000 likes on Facebook. They are currently a very active live band, playing many local shows throughout Pennsylvania and the Philadelphia area. They have also won several Battle Of The Bands and have played shows at Musikfest, Northampton County Fair, Mayfair and Liberty Music Fest just to name a few. They have been the support act for such bands as The WINERY DOGS, ADRENALINE MOB, HAKEN and VIRGIL DONATI and have played Vans Warped Tour, Progressive Nation At Sea 2014. Throughout the last few years, their playing and writing skills have improved tremendously at a very quick rate. In the Summer of 2014 it was time to go back into the studio to record their full length debut album A Light In The Dark which was produced by MIKE PORTNOY. The album also contains guest appearances by BUMBLEFOOT of GUNS N ROSES and Prog legend NEAL MORSE.

4 stars Being produced by Mike Portnoy, with the son Max as a drummer, it won't surprise anyone that the music is heavily influenced by Dream Theater not only on the composition level but also on the overall sound. Max is the son of Mike and he must have a big helping hand from his dad to have his drums high in the mix and sounding very close to those of Mike. Maybe he borrowed his kit from his dad. So, the album is so well produced that you'll never guess that those musicians are teenagers because they can really play their instruments. But when the clean vocals show off, you could hear a young and unstable voice from Thomas Cuce. I feel that the harsh vocals were more suited with the music throughout this album. His voice was more in control with the ballad "A Lonely Walk" that contain a nice build up with a guitar solo. This is also the case with the other short ballad "Legacy". The track "You are Not Me" show a clear Linkin Park influence in the music and you can hear influences from metal and alternative bands in various passages, especially in the extra track "Fortune Cookie" who was one of the first track that the band has recorded. Between Prog and Metal, the band want to develop the progressive side, and the complex time signatures displayed on this album, the long instrumental passages are prove to this. If the compositions are in the epic nature, the band manage to create some nice hooks that are easy to sing a long. I was impressed with the composition level and the musicianship and i am curious to see what this band will do in the future with or without Mike Portnoy as a producer, but they show some potential. Maybe the band will write songs that represents more of their own sound instead of sounding like a pastiche of Dream Theater.
Thanks to rdtprog for the artist addition.
