Autumn Electric biography
AUTUMN ELECTRIC is a progressive rock band from Seattle, WA, formed by Michael TREW (vocals/flute/guitar), and Naomi SMITH (keyboards/vocals) in 2008, with the help of Jessica EBALLAR (banjo, vocals) and Gene HARDY (bass). 'Very Soon the Light' was released that year as the band's debut studio album.

In 2009 Dan DESROSIERS joined as drummer and Jessica EBALLAR departed. Gene HARDY was replaced by Kevin GIBBONS on bass and the EP 'We Breathe the Same Air' was released.

In 2010 Barton MACGUIRE joined the band as a multi-instrumentalist, Kevin GIBBONS departed and 'If You're Home' was released as the 2nd Studio Album.

In 2012 Max STEINER joined as bassist, and 'Make Me a Tree' was released as the band's 3rd Studio Album. There was a tour of the West Coast to support the album featuring Johnny UNICORN as guest bassist.

In 2013 Max STEINER moved from bass to lead guitar replacing multi-instrumentalist Barton MACGUIRE, Dan DESROSIERS was replaced by Chris BARRIOS on drums, and Johnny UNICORN officially joined the band as bassist. Another tour of the West Coast followed, called The Healing Tour. Based largely around charity concerts for Healing Centers, and Hospices, the Healing Tour fitted in well with the 'Make Me a Tree' album's theme of empathy and renewal.

In 2014 Max STEINER moved to Germany, and was replaced by guitarist Dylan WELSH. 'Flowers For Ambrosia' was released as the 4th Studio Album - this being the album that finally established THE AUTUMN ELECTRIC as a serious progressive rock act.

2015 resulted in the 5th studio album 'Star Being Earth Child' being released. Inspired by a trip through the petroglyphs of New Mexico on their 2014 tour, this album is really rock opera which explores the mythology of Star Beings, the plight of Earth's environment, and spiritual awakening. Most of the album was recorded in Seattle, while STEINER's guitar arrangements for the album were added remotely from his new home in Germany. AUTUMN ELECTRIC toured extensively throughout the continental US in 2015 to promote the album, making use of specialized lights, projections and costume with the aid of Neil WILLSON (effects) and touring guitarist Josh Williams.

Part of the profits from the sales of the band's first three albums on bandcamp are donated to various charities. Singer/flutist/guitarist/frontman Michael TREW also has a successful solo career alongside his AUTUMN ELECTRIC commitments.

3 stars This was the fifth album from Seattle, WA, based prog quintet Autumn Electric and was released in 2015. Apparently, the concept behind it came from being inspired by a trip through the petroglyphs of New Mexico, and explores the mythology of Star Beings, the plight of Earth's environment, and spiritual awakening. The line-up was the same as for the previous year's 'Flowers For Ambrosia' with Michael Trew (vocals, guitar, flute), Naomi Adele Smith (keyboards, vocals, melodica), Max Steiner (lead guitar), Chris Barrios (drums, bass, guitar), and Johnny Unicorn (bass guitar, saxophones, vocals). Somewhat surprisingly there is a cover on here, which is somewhat unusual in what is something of a concept, but even more so given it is by folkie Tom Paxton. But in many ways, it also makes perfect sense, as although Autumn Electric are included on PA as a progressive band, it must have been a fairly borderline decision as many would probably disagree with that as there is a lot of acoustic music in what they do, and little in the way of normal progressive norms. I found the artist they reminded me most of at times was Chris de Burgh (back when he was a great singer songwriter, long before "Lady In Red").

This album may have been released in 2015 but its spiritual home in 1968 as there are a significant number of psychedelic influences in this, which make it a somewhat lightweight listening experience. It is pleasant all the way through, but there is nothing memorable and it is very easy to get distracted even when playing it on headphones, and although they attempt to put an edge on it with electric guitars here and there, it never really has the impact I am sure they were looking for. Given this was their fifth studio album I would have expected somewhat more and given I cannot find anymore releases since this one, their website no longer appears to be active and neither does there Facebook, I guess others felt the same.

3 stars Listening diary 10th March, 2021: Autumn Electric - If You're Home (indie folk/rock, 2010)

This band's later work is some of my favourite underground prog-folk-indie crossover music, so I'm slowly exploring what seems to be an extensive back catalogue that not many have paid attention to. This is sweet, and really that's it - there's no prog here whatsoever, just some sweet and well-performed folk rock songs, with the distinctive vocal already well developed. I can't say I remember anything from it though, it just feels like a bit of an inoffensive bedroom demo. Not bad, but not notable either.

5.1 (1st listen)

3 stars Sincere presentation, heartfelt passionate singing, but ultimately not Prog. Not as atrocious, as the Prog bands from 70s once they reached 80s era (most of them of course, there are good exceptions), not at all - it is a pleasant listening experience. Folksy (do I hear a banjo there?), acoustic guitar driven, the emotional theme of the lyrics is there for all to experience. Not really much more to say, I am not giving it less than 3 stars, because it's not bad, but they are (Prog music wise) lesser 3 stars because we are on the site where we are of course.
Thanks to evolver for the artist addition.
