3 stars It seems that "Emmaretta" was the last song that the original line-up of the band (Blackmore, Evans, Lord, Paice, Simper) recorded before Evans and Simper left the band. It is a song with some Soul, Blues and Funky influences, one of the best that this line-up recorded. It includes the use of some Wah-Wah pedal effects by Blackmore. The songs is finished with a brief drums solo by Paice and a fade-out.

The B-side of this single includes a different and shorter version of "The Bird Has Flown" which also sounds well. The full version of this song was included in their third self-titled album from 1969. This song, "Emmaretta" and their full self-titled album showed that this line-up was improving a lot as a band. Unfortunately, differences about the musical direction led to Evans and Simper being fired from the band in mid 1969.
