4 stars - The first review for this artist altogether -

I had a pleasure to dive into the entire output of PENSIERO NOMADE, an instrumental (well, the recent latest album features vocals) act from Italy, obviously led by guitarist/multi-instrumentalist Salvo Lazzara. Obviously, because the first album from 2008 features no other musicians at all. This album is the fourth one and Salvo - playing guitar only - is accompanied by drummer Davide Guidoni and Luca Pietropaoli on trumpet, flugelhorn, double bass, piano and electronics.

The covers, both front and back, show a street at night. This imagery happens to reflect quite perfectly my own feelings that I get when listening to the album. Think of a pleasant evening spent with your friends. Sometime after midnight you drive home, perhaps with your beloved one, the streets are empty, you may listen to some good music from the radio or a CD, and you get an extraordinarily beautiful, slightly melancholic feeling in the calmness of the night, being happy of the good time spent and getting slightly sleepy. Especially 'Barcarola' that opens this album gave me this feeling, or rather a vivid memory of the situations described above. Would I have felt so if the cover had completely different themes? Who knows. But I'm glad of the perfect album cover!

Forget the compromising all-around tag "crossover prog" that reveals nothing else than that it's not full-blown prog. If you're familiar with the ECM label and its moody European modern chamber jazz albums by artists such as PETER ERSKINE, TERJE RYPDAL, TOMASZ STANKO, JOHN SURMAN, MISHA ALPERIN, ENRICO RAVA, JAN GARBAREK, ARILD ANDERSEN, etc, you get the idea I'm trying to share here. This music surely would better be at home in the main category of jazz, not rock. Jazz taken as a sincere musical attitude, not as a guideline to sound like certain kind of music with certain set of rules. The second track is a bit more groovy and lively, the third one aptly titled 'Danza Notturna'. And so on.

Trying to verbalize the eleven tracks would be a clumsy, useless attempt. The leading instruments are acoustic guitar and trumpet/ flugelhorn. The rhythm section is used very sparingly; the music floats and pulsates naturally like a breath of fresh air. By the way, 'Sensitive' features spoken voice by Clarissa Botsford. This doesn't break the delicate, cinematic aura of the album.

Imperfetta solitudine, imperfect solitude, right? I don't know exactly what the artist has been thinking of as 'imperfect', but to me this beautiful, calm, thoughtful and introspective music is close to being perfect for certain feelings. This is not music made in order to prove how technically excellent the musicians are, this is music that feels like it comes straight from the heart; if you get into the same wave-length emotionally, it feels amazingly comforting to listen to.
