4 stars TD as prime live improvisers

While their early studio albums are key classics, I think Tangerine Dream were just as creative playing live on stage. This album is a good example of how well these three musicians can improvise in creative ways to create new music, and also shows that while the studio was an important instrument for them, they were not dependent on it. Indeed, I like their live albums better than their studio albums during the 1980s. Whereas their 80s studio albums come across as mostly stale, they were still able to sound original live on stage. Ricochet is an early live album, sandwiched between the wonderful Rubycon and the disappointing Stratosphear studio albums. Not surprisingly, the music shows a mix of both influences (the unstructured groundbreaking soundscapes of Rubycon, and the more structured drum-machined Stratosphear). But while there is some drum machine on Ricochet, it is not nearly as egregious as would be found on later studio albums, and the synth sequencers still provide the main structure. This album contains two long instrumentals (like Rubycon), which provide some novel music and sounds and flow quite well (apart for one short drum-machine section). I think it is an essential part of their catalogue, tying for second- or third- place alongside Phaedra. I give it 8.0 out of 10 on my 10-point scale, which translates to low 4 PA stars.
