3 stars Castaways and Cutouts is the full-length debut studio album by American, Portland, Oregon based pop/ rock act The Decemberists. Castaways and Cutouts is not the first release by the band though as they released the 5 Songs EP in 2001.

The music on the album is pleasant and simple pop/ rock with a folky touch and with an emphasis on strong melody lines. The lyrics are sometimes weird, but in a good and humourous way. Colin Meloyīs warm voice is the center of the music which is rather basic but well composed. Most songs are about 4-5 minutes long but the ending song California One/Youth And Beauty Brigade is a 9:50 minute long song which is a bit more experimental in sound than the rest. Not much though.

The musicianship is excellent. The Decemberists create a warm and organic sound. A well playing band. The production is equally warm and pleasant.

Castaways and Cutouts is a good and warm pop/ rock album that is mostly enjoyable because of its strong and memorable vocal lines. The organic sound and pleasant instrumentation adds to the warm atmosphere. I could have wished for more experimental structures in the songs, but the band keeps it simple. Maybe a bit too simple and inoffensive IMO. Itīs not an album I will listen to much in the future but itīs professional and well composed and deserves a 3 star rating.
