4 stars Genesis' Foxtrot is one of the most famous albums of the progressive rock movement and features the great point of reference for the prog epic, 'Supper's Ready'. Genesis would further expand on its theatrical way of constructing songs, which allowed for a lot of expressive and original vocal ideas by Pater Gabriel. The band still has a remarkably distinct lo-fi sound here that actually worked a little bit better for them on Nursery Cryme. To my ears Foxtrots sounds very roughly made, which admittedly does allow for some moments of great 'in the moment' performances. Since every-thing has been said what there is to be said about this album I will just finish by saying that is worthwhile to consider how different Genesis at its zenith was from all other groups at the time. The interplay, the song-writing, the oddly warm sounds, the Englishness, the loose timing, the endless variaton in dynamics. The originality of it all is staggering. If only bands these days would look more to how these tracks were excelling because of the ability to tell stories both musically and lyrically. By the way; I've never really understood why I'm not a bigger fan of Genesis than I am. I guess it's a 'not my sound' thing.
