1 stars This is Journey's last album with Steve Perry handling the lead vocals. It was released in grunge-era 1996, and the band seemed to be attempting to shed its 80s Arena Rock stigma.

The band built its success on uplifting energetic melodic Rock and anthemic ballads-- but they apparently decided to drop the crucial "uplifting energetic melodic" part of the formula for this collection of songs. Granted, the ballads are still there...but the Rock part suffers from an overall lack of dynamic. To sum it up, I have to agree with this 2008 quote from Herbie Herbert (Journey's manager during their heyday) :

"Trial by Fire ?... I listened to that one time... and not one lift off... Not one moment of this is gonna go somewhere... Monotone, monotone..."
