5 stars I do not know if I would necessarily categorize this album as jazz-rock fusion, but I am ever so glad the Maiden Voyage has made it into the Progarchives lists!

(a side note: isn't that incredible that Herbie Hancock, who'd come up with this masterpiece 50 years ago, is still in business!)

To my ear, the Maiden Voyage is the highest achievement in the modal jazz realm. Miles Davis and John Coltrane may have invented modal jazz as a style (subgenre?), and their heir best-loved albums Kind of Blue and A Love Supreme have lots of brilliant stuff, but they aren't quite as pleasant to listen to as a whole. In other words, the Maiden Voyage is probably the most perfect all-around modal album of the 1960s era. I can think of some younger artists who have made even better albums, but to me the Maiden Voyage remains the modal jazz standard, which all newer albums will be measured up against.
