2 stars Once upon a time, in a land known as Poland, there was a fourpiece orchestra known as "Riverside". They made beautiful music and their fans were very appreciative for every new album that they let public. One day, however, the orchestra decided that they wanted to publish a concert also with pictures of them playing before a live audience. And they gave it the name "Reality Dream". It became a long and painstaking process to film, finish and give out to their many fans. After a long delay, the filmed concert finally reached its public. But lo and behold, there was something terribly wrong with the final result. A horrible demon, known as the "Digital Effects Gremlin", had sneaked into the postproduction facilities and destroyed all the filmed images. The orchestra had played their best yet, the sound recording was flawless, and the pictures of the orchestra were fantastic, but the Gremlin had spoiled it all. It was almost unbearable to watch; dust, scratches and lightdamages everywhere, taking the focus off the music, totally. Sadly, the orchestras fans favoured the DVD that came as a bonus with their album "ADHD", where the Gremlin had not been able to touch the original material, and so the "Reality Dreams" DVD fell into oblivion, only to be remembered as the biggest progdissapointment in 2010. And it was still only the beginning of January...

PS I really. really love the music of Riverside, but I can´t understand why many of my favouritebands; Opeth, PT and Riverside, have some guys playing around with these digital video effects boxes. Lasse Hoile is one terrible example, but this is the worst I´ve ever seen! Sadly. The band is at it´s peak and the filming is great however. I even like the colourcorrection, it gives an atmospheric look that you can´t get at the original gig, but please spare us from this in the future. Keep your eyes closed if you buy this.

4 stars DVD is very good (for me 4.5 stars) Great set of tracks. obviously lacked 1 or 2 (such as Schizophrenic Prayer), but it is always. All can not be satisfied:) Beautiful pieces, a half star is deducted for the lack of recordings from the last album (and generally for the late publication of the above.) and "Digital Effects Gremlin ":):), not actually fit in anywhere, and from time to time tire eyes. Note, however, is at least a few tracks, where "variations" masters of special effects add to 'the nerve' songs, photos, and cause a slight jump adrenaline. Addition of schizophrenia, and this probably was the intention of the manufacturer. In short: "What anyone who likes". Me and my friends liked the concert fell. Sorry for bad English and very greet those who were able to decipher the end:):)

5 stars River(side) of dreams

Riverside are one of the most universally acclaimed bands on this site, with all four of their album releases to date comfortably achieving in excess of 4 stars. It is perhaps surprising then that this is the band's first DVD release, and thus the first chance most of us have had to witness them live.

The concert captured here actually took place in May 2008, some time before their current album "Anno Domini High Definition" was even a glint in their collective eyes. Captured playing in Toya Studios (don't be misled, they are playing to a live audience) in Lodz, Poland, the band present a wonderful summary of their first three albums collectively known as the "Reality dream trilogy". In the main concert, which occupies the first of the two discs, we begin with the opening two tracks from the first album "Out of myself", then work our way back and forth through that album, "Second life syndrome" and "Rapid eye movement". The gig runs to around an hour and a half in all, the twelve tracks flowing in almost seamless fashion to form a superbly coherent whole.

To label what we have here as "progressive metal" (the band's assigned genre on this and other sites), is more than a little misleading. For sure there is a strong rhythm section on which the music is set, but there is a symphonic quality to the music here which is accentuated by the lush keyboard swathes, the supremely melodic lead guitar passages, and the smoothness of the vocals. Indeed, the vocal talents of Mariusz Duda are for me what sets Riverside apart from many of their peers. There is never a hint of grunts, growls, shouts, etc., the vocals are among the most tuneful I have heard from a band of this type. They perform the role of another instrumental aspect to the band's line up, complementing rather then conflicting with the overall sound. As a reference point, while I would compare their music with the likes of Porcupine Tree, while Hogarth era Marillion often comes to mind in the way the band frame the mood of their songs.

In terms of composition and musicianship, Riverside have little to prove. Their excellent catalogue of studio albums already offers strong evidnce of their talents. The only remaining question was therefore, could they transfer that supremacy to a live environment and the answer to that is undoubtedly yes. The performance here is exemplary, indeed in audio terms, this could be a studio album.

Had the package been complete at this point, I would still have been recommending it as an essential purchase. We find however that we are but halfway through the entertainment, with a well filled second disc still to view. This opens with a couple of "Encores", the magnificent "Before" from "Second life syndrome" being as good if not better than anything from the main feature. The 13 minute "Ultimate trip" wraps up the gig but not the presentation.

Seven further live recordings are taken from gigs in Germany, Holland and Canada between 2006 and 2008. Admirably, none of these duplicate the main set, although all but two are also taken from the "Reality Dream trilogy". The two other tracks here come from the same period, but featured only on the "02 Panic room" EP. While these recordings are technically noticeably inferior (visual and audio wise), they offer an interesting contrast with the smooth production of the main event. The final video is a behind the scenes look at the band filmed by John Vis.

In terms of the technical production of the product, I was surprised to note that the sound is in 2.0 Dolby only, no 5.1. This does not detract from the quality of the recording though. The lighting and camera work are excellent throughout, although the visual effects used to enhance the experience are perhaps an acquired taste. I can understand the desire to present a product with its own identity, but the effects can sometimes appear as art for art sake. My other minor criticism is the DVD navigation, which can be hard to see. The package as a whole comes in an appealing digipak type double fold out box. Although released under the auspices of Metal Mind productions, this set is the first for the ProgTeam Management label, gaining the PT_001 number.

In all, a quite magnificent DVD set, which offers a superb insight into the live performances of this fine band. The quality of the music helps a lot of course but the bands ability to translate their studio recordings into top rate live recordings should not be underestimated. This is an excellent summary of the band's first three albums.

3 stars Ok, usually I'm not a big fan of the so-called "Progressive Metal", even though sometimes I can appreciate a few live gigs, like the present one, anyway witnessing the activity of this Polish Band from Warsewz in a special way!!

When the work "Anno Domini High Definition" from Studio was issued, simultaneously Riverside recorded this live in the course of 2008, then post produced at Toya Studios in the following year...two band members came from the world of prog metal, but actually the other members were so involved with a different genre, similar to an aggressive progressive rock, tinged with dark tones, which brought about a diverse mood around their exhibitions on stage!

They remind me of a kind of Modern and dark psychedelic prog, resembling the sound of the recent Porcupine Tree for example, regardless of the ipnotic opener entitled "The same river", whose atmoshere is enriched by means of an interesing guitar, almost "oneiric" in its melodic lines. Unfortunately some other songs like "Rainbow box" or "Out of myself" are not convincing, above all for their lacking creativity, as well as the vocal interpretation, which seems to emulate J. La Brie from Dream Theater in a forced manner...even though the following suite is not bad, especially the interplay guitar/organ within a "non-linear" pattern of "Volte-Face", here reminding me of Dream Theater once again. Instead "Reality dream #3" is characterized by some soft breaks-through alternating a few immediate technical solos, without a common thread.

The visualization and the scenographic aspects of the band, a bit static on stage, represent the second defect of this band, despite of the 16 minutes suite "Second Life Syndrome" ,which is their classic powerful number...ok, but is it enough to regard their music an innovative example of art, especially nowadays?

Anyway a good and essential live work only within a collection of dark prog metal, certainly influenced by a kind of soft progressive rock!! So make your own choice as usual!!

4 stars My polish girlfriend gave me this DVD on my anniversary in May, I really didn't know what to expect of the band live cause I only knew their studio recordings.

Like I always do, I watched the bonus DVD first, I like to see backstage footage, interviews and extras much more than the proper live presentations on most of the time (maybe the only exception is Live At Wembley by QUEEN).

The first DVD is the show itself, and it's a very good recording, both audio and video, and seeing them live male me wonder how good is Mariusz Duda, cause as a bass player myself, I know how hard is to play some lines while you sing, Mariusz dows a fantastic work live, as the whole band.

I think it's a great buy for any prog rock fan, this polish band deserves more light on our '70's' world.

5 stars I'm not a big fan of some of their latest entries in their catalog but I have to admit that I enjoy a lot the first and the second release. This live video is no exception. For me one of the best live releases I know. Not a lot of interaction with the public or improvisation but it simply flows from the notes of "The same river" to the amazing final song "The curtain falls". I'm listening and watching it a third time already in the last 3 days. In the last couple of years I didn't write to many reviews but I felt the need to say a few words about this. I find their music having a high degree of melancholy and I think they did a great job choosing the track list in just the right order. It's such a shame that Piotr Grudziński died last year. I guess it will be hard for them to continue but I hope they can continue and maybe find the power and inspiration to release another one matching their first record.
