2 stars A two star holy grail

Released in 2004, this 7CD set is the latest of these collections from Tangerine Dream at time of writing. Once again, we have a fine selection of bootleg recordings of gigs by the band, this time from between 1976 and 1983. The tapes have been subsequently remastered via the Tangerine Tree fan base, and then further enhanced by Jerome Froese of the band.

As with the first box, some of the performances appear to be of original unnamed material. This time however, roughly half of the tracks are named, with many being live renditions of album tracks. Thus we have the more familiar sounds of pieces such as Cherokee lane, Monolight, Logos, Mojave plan, Force majeure etc.

Once again, the recording quality is variable, but rarely better than adequate. The Nottingham recording for example picks up the bass sounds very well and is probably the best find here, while the Washington recordings (which mirror closely the Encore album in terms of content) have far too much treble while being all but devoid of bass. Those who feel that the sound quality of albums by the Tangs is an integral part of their listening pleasure would be well advised to stay away. Those however who yearn for more of the type of music the band created during their golden age, including long, previously unheard material, will consider this to be something of a holy grail.

Incidentally, do not be misled by the plethora of CDs included in this box. While there is undoubtedly a wealth of material, the various gigs from which the recordings are sourced are kept separate from each other on separate discs. Thus for example, the final disc runs to a mere 35 minutes.

Once again, one for collectors and fans only, but recommended highly for such enlightened people.
