5 stars Fantastic Rock Concert!

Review by Sergio Campos @ 2:20:56 AM EST, 2/17/2005 reminds me that I have never reviewed this wonderful live album. Thanks Sergio! Right after reading the review, I grabbed this double CD and I played it outloud. Oh man ... what a fantastic rock show! I remember buying three albums at the same time in our local store: "Moving Target", "Paradox" (2 CD version) and this "Royal Hunt 1996". All purchase decision was made on the basis of "Moving Target" music where the store keeper whom I knew very well willing to give a try to taste the music of RH. Wow! It BLEW my mind away man .. So I decided to buy all of three available in that store. Since then (I think it was 2000) I was hooked to the band. Yup, I thought it's not prog - but who cares? As long as it produces great music and it's rocking (this is a must!) I will go for it. And . I really love the band; even I bought the solo album of DC Cooper (lead singer), Andre Anderson.

Royal Hunt's music is a blend of pop-rock, metal, symphonic and neo-classical music. One thing for sure, all tracks presented in this album are all excellent - melodious, most of them upbeat keyboard-based music with some flavor of rocking electric guitar. The band is led by Andre Andersen (keys and guitars) backed up by DC Cooper (voice), Jacob Kjaer (guitars), Kenneth Olsen (drums) and Steen Mogensen (bass). The music of ROYAL HUNT is unique in terms of keyboard sounds that create violin / cello sounds so that overall it seems like an orchestra behind their music. You will find also the influence of classical music in keyboard sound. It's exciting and very enjoyable music. I almost like all of their albums, regardless they are prog or not. Their music is so inspiring.

This live set opened with an atmospheric live concert: hand clapping and shouting from the crazy crowd (mostly youngsters, as I look at the sleeve) with soft keyboard and drum beats. The music firmly enters with the guiding beats from drummer - very dynamic and energetic opening! When the music is in full swing, I can hear the sound quality is really excellent. I don't believe this is a live record as the sonic quality is superb. When DC Cooper sings "Eyes of the night ..." at the beginning of first track "Flight" I can see his powerful voice is the same excellent quality as studio version. I think DC is one of the best rock singers in the world. The opening track flows nicely to the next "1348" that has been my favorite track from Moving Target album. I like the opening lyrics "Future's coming from the past .." yeah . !!. Andre Anderson's keyboard is very catchy and it's killing me in many segments of the music passages. When DC sings "December forty eight ..!!" In high register note, it gives more impression that he is a talented singer.

After the first two energetic and rocking tracks DC starts communicating with the crowd in English and Japanese; followed with a soft keyboard that remarks the entry to the next good track "Wasted Time". It's a simple rock track with some pop touch combined with simple and soft guitar / bass riffs and wonderful keyboard. Oh man . the keyboard sounds really good to my ears! The short guitar solo is also nice. So, I can say that it's a kind like an ear candy rock song? Yeah, probably. But, I truly enjoy this album. "Stay Down" brings the show in a more relax fashion as the tempo is now in medium speed and pop touch with some flavor of keyboard sounds.

"On The Run" that is not really an excellent track on studio version but is now performed much better; even the sonic quality is better than the studio. It's an uplifting track. After six rocking tracks, Andre performs his nice and short keyboard solo. Disc One is closed with a track that has been my all time favorite because it's full with energy and relatively fast speed "Making A Mess". What a great song performed live!!! "I was raised in a faraway land trying to be number one ." oh . what a nice melody with a great singing and uplifting lyric. You must listen to the keyboard and guitar work at this track man. It's so W.O.N.D.E.R.F.U.L. It's not complex, but it's wonderful.

Disc Two has the same quality as Disc One. It starts with "Clown In the Mirror" that sounds better here than the studio version. The piano intro is nice, especially when the vocal enters. Jacob Kjaer performs his guitar solo accompanied with keyboard at the background. It reminds me to a Floydian guitar work. The other interesting piece is on drums and bass solo combined with hand clapping and shouting from the crowd. I don't think I need to elaborate the content of Disc Two as it is as excellent as Disc One. It concludes with "Time" that starts with a nice choir followed with a rocking music. Yeah! "I'm running out of time ..". Keep on rocking! Keep on progging!

Yours progressively,

GW

"Fly forever and try / Cross over the sky / Feeling the wind blow. Cry for losers who died / They're watching you fly / Over the rainbow."
