2 stars The Porter is the last EP/ single released by german tech metal band Disillusion before they made their debut album Back To Times Of Splendor. This EP is from 2002. I wasnīt too impressed with their last EP Three Neuron Kings and I was eagerly awaiting this one to see if I would like this one better. The reason why Iīve been waiting to listen to The Porter when I didnīt like their last EP much is because I heard a lot of potential on that one, but didnīt like their overall style much. Iīm sorry to say that itīs still the case with The Porter.

The music is complex and at times thrashy tech metal which is a style I would normally enjoy very much. I enjoy the technical thrash metal riffing which they usually use in the verses while I donīt enjoy their mid tempo anthemic chorus riffs with clean singing. First of all the clean singing really makes the german accent very obvious and I donīt like the singing style either. The semi-growling style isnīt much better and I canīt help thinking that this music is made solely for germans with itīs very structured and square style.

The musicianship is besides the horrible vocals very good, and itīs sad that the band has not chosen to get a more charismatic lead singer. It would have done something positive for their music.

The production is good. Everything is clearly heard in the mix.

Once again I must say that this is just a band Iīll probably never like even though they should have been right down my alley with their thrashy tech metal style. Sometimes the sound of some bands just donīt suit my taste even though it looks promising from the start. Iīll have to rate The Porter 2 stars and thatīs not because of a lack in their technical skills which is high but because I just donīt like their sound.
