4 stars US-based band Nascent provides some original ideas to highly explored genre progressive metal on their debut.

Mixing prog metal with other genres isn't uncalled for or unknown, but the way nascent goes about it is a bit different. First and foremost; the drumming is mostly jazz-tinged in all tunes, resulting in some real contrasts in the soundscapes at times. The first two tunes on the album explore some rather nifty asynchron riff and drum patterns too, further enhancing this influence. On the last 4 tunes on this release ambient music, ballads and space rock are all mixed in with Nascent's brand of progressive metal - most times given specific segments of their own. Some details are carried over into the metal segments too, which do create a strong feeling of thought about the cohesion of these compositions.

If you like prog metal and wants to try out a slightly different flavour; this is a release you might wanna check out. Especially if jazz mixed with metal sounds like a good idea.
