Review by Conor Fynes
PROG REVIEWER
2 stars 'Watershed Radio Sampler' - Opeth (Single)

Here is a promotion for Swedish death metal band Opeth's 2008 album 'Watershed'; a piece of work that polarized fans, and generally had me feeling both impressed and disappointed after listening to it. Of the album's seven tracks, three are represented here, two of which being repeated in their cut, radio edit forms. With this in mind, this product does not feel necessary for anyone except fans and the original media to come across; the radio edits may be cute, but they are fairly unnecessary to the enjoyment of what are otherwise fairly strong tracks in Opeth's catalogue.

Although it does serve its purpose fairly well to give an overview of what 'Watershed' is all about, taking half of the album and piling it onto a promotion does feel as if it defeats the purpose of giving a short, concise burst. Instead, at thirty five minutes in length, the sampler isn't too much shorter than the actual full length album itself. Instead, the 'Watershed Sampler' feels quite obsolete now that the record has dropped a few years ago. While the music here is quite good (and is better experienced on the official record), this promo sampler is probably best sought only by an avid collector of the band's material.
