2 stars 'A Voice In The Dark' - Blind Guardian (Single)

Blind Guardian continues to pursue the simplified approach they begun with their previous album 'A Twist In The Myth' with this single and upcoming album. Having begun as a purely speed/power metal act before turning to a more complex style of music, Blind Guardian seems to be content to return to their roots. Unfortunately, this brand of the Guardian's music only pales in comparison to earlier work and while being skillfully executed, fails to generate much interest for the coming album 'At The Edge Of Time.'

Coupled with a music video that revolves around Aztec mythology and culture, Blind Guardian's musical skills are still in top order. The songwriting feels a bit lackluster, however. While the vocal harmonies of Hansi Kursch are powerful and up to par, the melodies themselves don't really lend themselves well to the band's skill. 'A Voice In The Dark' is fueled incessantly for five minutes by speed, energy, and an inherent lack of dynamic or change. The track is certainly functional, but it fails to do what a single should; to excite people for the coming album.

There are also two additional tracks to back up the main attraction and give the single some semblance of unique purchasing quality to it. The first of these is a cover by Austrailian pop idol John Farnham. While Blind Guardian has done memorable and exciting covers before ('To France,' and 'Mr. Sandman,' to name a couple) this comes off as mildly unpleasant. The mixing feels incredibly awkward; the band seems to have tried to be faithful with the pop origin of the song by turning down the guitars in the mix, but it ends up making the track feel hollow.

The final song here is actually a saving grace. 'War Of The Thrones' is an intelligent acoustic track that is easily likened to that of a medieval soundscape. With minimal percussive presence here, the song is mainly driven by warm guitar playing and the as- ever intense vocals of Hansi. Towards the end, an attempt at adding a classical string section comes into the mix, but it feels a bit thin to add much to the song. In any case, a great track.

'A Voice In The Dark' is not the most promising single these Teutons have released, but I still hope that the album has brighter moments. In terms of this single alone, those interested should check out the acoustic track 'War Of The Thrones.'
