3 stars Another release from Marillion's Friday Night Live series documenting their live performances of complete albums as showcased at the Marillion Weekends. Recorded at the 2007 weekend, this time around it was This Strange Engine's turn, though I personally find the whole play-the- whole-album deal less exciting this time around. Perhaps it's because the three previous Friday Night Live slots had gone to albums which really lent themselves to this approach - Brave, of course, was constructed with an eye to playing the whole thing on tour, whilst Afraid of Sunlight and Marbles were thematic concept albums despite not having a core narrative, whereas This Strange Engine wasn't really any sort of concept album at all.

Another issue is that the band seem a little embarrassed by some of the material - H introduces 80 Days by casually mentioning that it had recently come close to the bottom in a poll of fans' favourite Marillion tracks, and recounts how embarrassed the band were when they tried to play the calypso-influenced Hope for the Future in Brazil and completely failed to impress the local audience. Either way, something about the chemistry of the evening seems a little off and unless I am in the right mood I can't focus on the album, though it's a decent enough rendition of the material.
