Review by erik neuteboom
PROG REVIEWER
4 stars This band is a pleasant maverick in the progressive rock history. Their instrumentation includes unique sounding instruments like the bassoon and krumhorn. After making two studio albums (lots of folky and medieval climates on their first and more electric instruments on their second) Gryphon went on tour with Yes. The influence of this legendary progrock dinosaur can be heard on Gryphon their third and most acclaimed album entitled " Red queen to Gryphon three", a wonderful blend of folk and prog featuring Wakemanesque keyboards and Howe-like guitarwork. This compilation CD includes 15 tracks from their first five studio-albums, including renditions from the 'traditionals' "The astrologer" and "Plough-boy's dream" and the Yes-inspired songs ""Midnight mushrumps", "Lament" and "Ein klein Heldenleben", the folky elements give the music from Gryphon an unique extra dimension. Even the venomous and cynical British music press praised Gryphon, now it's up to you to discover their very disctinctive sound!
