Barrdo biography
BARRDO is a project created in 2015 by Pierre Alexandre (a.k.a. PA, from Montréal), known for his independent label Poulet Neige, his (now defunct) band LAC ESTION and as the bass player in stoner rock band FUUDGE.

Barrdo's musical horizon is vast, and difficult to map. Many genres rub shoulders: pop, folk, rock, jazz, classical, psych, experimental, prog... In studio, Barrdo is scattered and somewhat inconsistent, oscillating between formatted songs and more experimental, even esoteric pieces. On stage, PA and his band rely on the spiritual, the trance and the abandonment.

Apologie des états seconds, first album recorded with Vincent Blain (L'INDICE) and released in September 2016, already contained most of the elements that characterize Barrdo with a shamanic and lo-fi side. L'éternel retour, the second album, was released in February 2019 and co-produced by PA and David Bujold (FUUDGE). This time we can clearly hear some PINK FLOYD, HARMONIUM, KARKWA, SUFJAN STEVENS, SWANS and BEATLES influences. The third album, Les méandres de la soif (released in August 2020) continued in this vein.

Then, in May 2022, Barrdo released a double-LP. The choice to split Équivoques into two distinct volumes is particularly wise since it allows PA to better channel his overflowing imagination and to organize his disorder, so to speak. Thus, the first volume is smoother, with sophisticated indie-pop-folk songs, while volume 2 is much crazier. Here we go from psych-prog to heavy metal to chamber music to operatic rock to stoner.

3 stars This latest Barrdo album is yet another surprise in his discography. Here, the predominant style seems to be country music. The compositions are still very rich. The string and brass arrangements are lovely and bring a nice depth to the album. The lyrics are interesting, albeit very personal.

My favorite tracks are the short instrumental "Jour inouï" (3.5/5) and the soaring "Tabarnak" (4/5). Psychedelic as can be, I wish the latter lasted longer! By the way, these are the only tracks without any country aspects.

The other eight tracks are all good (3/5), but nothing earth-shattering. Just something pleasant to listen to. Simple but effective. I'm one of those people who prefers more adventurous releases, such as last year's fantastic double album "Équivoques", but I like to listen to lighter stuff from time to time.

Rumor says that this album is Barrdo's penultimate. It's a shame because it's a project I love.

4 stars [Originally published at The Progressive Aspect]

It's not often that I would review two albums together, but there's really no way to do justice to either volume of Barrdo's Équivoques by tackling them individually. In terms of length, the two could certainly have been released as one title, but there's very good reason for the separation into two volumes. Much of the enjoyment and wonder of Équivoques, Vols 1 & 2 comes from the way that they really are day and night. You can see this just by the artwork, without hearing a note - but, wow, the way Barrdo have aurally depicted the difference between day and night in the music has to be heard to be truly appreciated. Where the first volume is all light and airy, soft, smooth and slinky, the second is darker and edgier, harder, angular and heavier. The two complement each other beautifully in their contrasts, and the change in aesthetic and atmosphere is incredibly impactful.

Barrdo seem to have around a dozen releases since their first in 2015 (at least, that I've found across two Bandcamp pages), but the structure of the Équivoques releases gives a cohesion and coherence to their sound that is somewhat unprecedented. Thus, while the music of Barrdo has always been rather eclectic, with a great deal of sounds and styles thrown into the mix, because of the way the two Équivoques volumes have been structured, there is a fluidity and flow that no other Barrdo release shares. Especially with Vol. 1, there is a subtlety that belies the progressive and exploratory nature of Barrdo. Unlike earlier releases, there are no real curveballs thrown here, and on first listen it could almost be mistaken for an indie pop album. Almost, but not quite. In fact, I found it quite reminiscent of the self- proclaimed "experimental pop" of Belgian RIO band, Aksak Maboul. Those who enjoyed that band's 2020 comeback album (after 30 years absence!), may well find much to enjoy here, too.

While I wouldn't go so far as to say they mine the same RIO/Avant foundations as Aksak Maboul, Barrdo definitely have an eclectic and experimental flair. The music of Barrdo, throughout previous releases, and even over just these two, is diverse enough that it is hard to nail down any particular influences. I'm reminded of several different bands and artists, but whether or not they actually influenced Barrdo is, well, equivocal. I'm reminded of the folk and fusion of fellow Canadians Maneige, Sloche and Harmonium, and of the chanson of troubadours such as Jacques Brel and Serge Gainsbourg. Perhaps a little more fusion via Miles Davis and Herbie Hancock. Krautrock a la Can. From more modern times, Luna, Portishead, Stereolab, Aquaserge, Circle and King Gizzard and the Lizard Wizard. Heck, by the time we get to Vol. 2, maybe even some Swans, Shellac, and Dream Theater? Why not? Barrdo appear to have no stylistic barriers, no limits, nor constraints.

On previous albums one can imagine some critics complaining of a lack of direction (though I would never be one of those), but by creating such a deliberate dichotomy with the two volumes of Équivoques, there is greater focus and less disorder, as sounds and styles are channelled one way or the other, giving order to chaos. Équivoques Vol. 1, then, is the easy going and easy listening pop, psych and folk and chanson album. But as the light dims, the denizens of the night come out for Vol. 2, which is more unhinged, unbridled and abrasive. The post-rock turns to math-rock. The psychedelia of the first volume is twisted into more metallic forms. The shoegaze into stoner haze. Dream pop into noise rock. If you look upon the discographies of, for example, King Crimson and Frank Zappa as mixing beauty and the beast, then Barrdo has put all the beauty on Vol. 1 and saved the beast for Vol. 2.

But who are Barrdo? Or, perhaps, more accurately, who is Barrdo, for while there are over twenty performers (including a string quartet and two choirs) over the two volumes of Équivoques, the band is essentially the project and vision of multi-instrumentalist Pierre Alexandre (aka PA), and whoever he needs to take him to where his instincts and desires dictate. This feels like the most ambitious vision yet from PA, and in my opinion he has perfectly realised it. The heterogeneous nature of previous Barrdo releases is not compromised, so much as concentrated. Both have rich and exploratory arrangements, but completely different aesthetics. I guess it might be entirely possible that some listeners may like one album, but not the other - so different they are, in spite of sharing so much. I guess I'm still undecided, even after so many listenings, but I think I love both equally, and have not yet listened to one without wanting to listen to the other too.

What's intriguing is that the two Équivoques appear to have had their genesis in 2020, a year that saw many (if not most) bands creating more minimalist and stripped down albums, with less instrumentation and ornamentation. Instead, PA has gone gloriously over the top to create the most lush and expansive Barrdo release - or, indeed, releases - yet. It seems a great shame to me that these two albums will likely fly under most listeners' radars, so I dearly hope at least one or two people who read this might take a chance and give the two volumes of Équivoques a listen. The greatest problem I can foresee is that most prog fans tend toward either the classic sound of symphonic and neo-prog, or for the more avant and experimental. Barrdo approach both poles, but in such a zig-zag fashion, and taking in so much more along the way, that their audience is potentially as narrow as their palette is broad. I hope I'm wrong, because Équivoques is an awesome pair of albums that deserve to be heard and enjoyed.

3 stars Barrdo is offering an unexpected treat barely 5 months after the release of a double album. For some unknown reason, they have decided to re-record two pieces from "Équivoques vol. 1" and to radically change the style. The musicians are the same as on the original recordings, except for the drummer (again, we don't know why).

"Jamais (prise 2)" (4/5) is nice. We move away from PINK FLOYD and get closer to WILLIE NELSON. The melody remains touching. Amusingly, they kept the measures in 7/8 in the chorus. The guitar solo is fine. The modulations are numerous. The finale is... typical!

"Cette nuit (prise 2)" (3/5) is a bit less in my taste. I preferred the soaring atmosphere of the original version. Here, we are dealing with a slow and rather noisy alternative rock. However, the quasi-punk finale gives some energy back.

The mere fact that Barrdo is still experimenting is reassuring.

4 stars Here we are at the beginning of "Équivoques vol. 2". After only one minute of listening, we already feel that the atmosphere is very different from volume 1. Arrangements are as well crafted, with brass and strings, but the tone is more serious, heavier. The cover art of volume 2 is judiciously darker.

"Et si pour une fois" (4/5) opens the ball with a 4/4 groove and a rather complex guitar pattern à la ROBERT FRIPP. After the second chorus, the song evolves into a surprising jazz-funk segment. The transition between this segment and the last chorus is a strong moment.

Then the mood changes radically with "Hymne à la mort" (5/5). Band members describe this piece as ancient-Greek music, including oud and riq. The lyrics by Pierre Alexandre and Robert Choquette praise death as a source of life. It is well written. Suddenly, we get into a more metal segment, using the same themes as in the beginning. The whole sequence remains fluid. It ends with a fade-out featuring the string quartet playing disturbing dissonances.

Barrdo now decides to increase the noise level to 11 with "Intro stoner" (3/5), which is not an intro per se. After 2 minutes of sonic violence, the cut is very dry. But it does its job of warming up our ears for the next piece.

We continue in the stoner-rock-prog-metal style with "Te voilà tombé du ciel" (5/5), a piece that can't leave anyone indifferent. It is fast, percussive, epic. The long central part is instrumental, but still captivating. At the end, we hear the choir for the first time, which makes this piece even more grandiose.

About "CODA démon" (4/5), I would like to quote Pierre Alexandre: "Originally, this short piece was the coda to 'Te voilà tombé du ciel', whose title was 'Combat avec le démon' until the very end. Eventually, it gained its autonomy and earned its own track." This was a wise decision in my opinion. It makes the album breathe a little, which would have been too dense otherwise. Some delicate chamber music moment between two metal pieces, we don't hear that every day!

Another layer is added with "Ce que tu pourrais faire" (4/5). Two choirs sing simultaneously in two opposite styles: opera and throat singing. Really original and striking! Strings and horns then have a great time. The rhythm section plays a rather complex riff, the guitar improvises a dissonant solo, the screams continue... It's breathtaking. And sinister.

"Ouin ouin" (4/5), the grand finale of the album, is also stoner style, but slower and more introspective. Julie de Lafrenière speaks about humanity and makes us think about the problems we are currently experiencing. Pierre Alexandre simply replies: "Yeah, yeah, I understand". Musically repetitive but interesting. The short central bridge reminds us of the style of "Équivoques vol. 1", which we have almost forgotten at this point. The finale is abrupt but effective.

It's easy to understand why the Équivoques album was separated into two volumes. Both are excellent, but in distinctive styles.

I'll end by pointing out that Barrdo produced this double album during a worldwide pandemic. With more than 20 musicians involved and such varied and complex compositions, it's impressive. The only thing I regret is that the album doesn't exist (currently, at least) in physical format. It's only available digitally on their Bandcamp page. Let's hope that they will be able to finance their next production, otherwise it would be a great loss for the music lovers all over the world!

4 stars After two years of hard work, Barrdo offers us an impressive album. A double album, in fact. The two volumes of "Équivoques" (i.e. "ambiguous") are quite different. Volume 1 has a lighter and more approachable sound flirting with folk-rock.

The first piece starts the album in an original way. "Au creux de mon âme" (3/5) is reminiscent of old PINK FLOYD (San Tropez) with a short bridge à la KING CRIMSON. We also notice the unusual arrangements with flute and brass. The finale, however, is a bit long.

"J'aimerais tellement ça" (4/5) hypnotizes us with a repetitive guitar/bass riff. Then horns are added in the second verse. The last part is melodic and quite moving. Strings make their first appearance. An amusing coda at the very end.

Then we have "C'que tu voulais" (5/5), an extraordinary composition, both sophisticated and beautiful. I finally figured out that the main riff is in 15/16, which is uncommon in popular (even progressive) music. The arrangements are great, the LUNES string quartet plays perfectly. The RADIOHEAD-like bridge is relevant. The whole thing ends in an apotheosis where everything intertwines: rock instruments, flute, brass, strings. It's wonderful.

"Quelque chose de beau" (4/5) could have been an ordinary blues, but the addition of strings and horns makes it majestic. Once again, we realize that Pierre Alexandre has a natural talent for composition, no matter what the musical genre.

My interest drops a notch with "Jamais" (3/5), a song that reminds me of Wish You Were Here by PINK FLOYD. Later in October 2022, Barrdo released "Jamais (Prise 2)", re-arranged and re-recorded with a country feel. Surprisingly, I like this new version a little better.

"Combien" (4/5) is clearly the most dramatic (and progressive) song on this volume 1. A real crescendo of emotions. Pierre Alexandre even delivers a heartbreaking cry at the end.

"Cette nuit" (4/5) is melancholic. Although it is the finale, it could also be considered as a transition to the darker volume 2.

Upon first listen, this album seems accessible, yet we eventually discover that compositions and lyrics both have a beautiful depth. The production is impeccable, we can hear each instrument well and besides, all musicians involved are excellent. What more could we ask for?

One can only wonder why Barrdo offers us this digital album for free! It goes without saying that any financial contribution will be appreciated by the band, especially when you consider all the work behind this release. About this, there are several mini-documentaries (Making of Équivoques) available on Youtube.

By the way, this is my first review ever!
