Founded in Toronto, Canada in 2003

With the help of a dozen guest musicians contributing everything from extra guitars (lots of guitars!) to trombone, this psychedelic duo from Toronto, namely vocalist Brian Erikson and guitarist Lou Roppoli, got together in 2002 with a specific aim: to record a five-cd concept chronicling the adventures of a certain 'A Nexter Niode'. It is a sort of 21st century counterculture rock opus with 60's spirit ("tune out, turn on, take a trip" sort of thing). Their first album, "The Walkabout of A. Nexter Niode: Part 1 Off the Path", is the beginning of the journey.

The album is both musically and thematically very similar to PINK FLOYD's "The Wall": Erikson's moody vocals are eerily similar to Roger Waters', Roppoli's guitar licks sound much like Dave Gilmour's and the concept is just as ambitious. Despite these comparisons, however, the listener doesn't necessarily get the sense that the guys strive to be clones: although the guitar does take center stage on practically all tracks, Rappoli's fine play shows more than a passing resemblance to Gilmour's. As for the music, it's often much rockier than the FLOYD's, with shades of The TEA PARTY and a host of classic 70's prog influences. Overall, the album is well performed, produced and written. The CD packaging is also quite impressive - not a case of form over substance: the music is really a cut above the norm and the album quite an achievement for a first effort.

If you're a fan of PORCUPINE TREE or psychedelia in general, or simply a frustrated FLOYD enthusiast in search of more vibes, you should definitely look this album up.

2 stars Similar to their debut but not quite as PINK FLOYD sounding. There is also more of a Blues feel to this one. The subject matter is mature as it is primarily about sex, not just the lyrics but the cover art as well. This part 2 is called "Sexus" where our subject Nexter Niode is experimenting with it.

The opener "Seance" is atmospheric and spooky sounding with percussion."Voodoo Bitch" opens with some good guitar as the male vocals come in followed by the strong vocals of Dee Brown. Some nice guitar solos later. "Whitehouse" is funky but not really my style of music. "Icons" is a heavier tune with some well done guitar solos. "Secret Garden" is good with some low end guitar and sax later in the song.

Unfortunately I really don't care for a lot of these songs at all. The vocalist sounds similar to Roger Waters but not as good, I even would go as far to say that the vocals annoy me. These guys remind me of a Canadian band I don't care for at all, which I know doesn't help.

3 stars This record sounds a lot like PINK FLOYD during their "The Wall" and "The Final Cut" albums. The singer here really reminds me of Roger Waters, and the guitarist has his Gilmour impressions down pat. This record is very well wriiten, and performed at a high level. There is some variety as well, including some Blues and straight up Rock numbers, and several instrumentals.

This is a concept album that would be better explained by going on their website. Highlights for me are "Mainstream" a very PINK FLOYD sounding mellow tune, featuring acoustic guitar and softer vocals, though the song does grow to be more intense. And "Blood From A Stone" is very proggy, and the previous song an instrumental "High In The Himalayas" is a beautiful but short tune with keyboards and acoustic guitar.

This is a good release that PINK FLOYD fans may be interested in, as well as those who like concept albums.

3 stars House Of Not is a four piece band from Canada with guest musicians on mandolin, bass, keyboards, drums, didgeridoo, trombone and background vocals. The music on their second album has a lot of variation, that is one part of the music, the other part is the fact that at least half of the compositions has strong echoes from Pink Floyd (compelling and bombastic featuring howling electric guitarplay) and Roger Waters solo (vocals and acoustic guitar). At some moments you got the idea that you are listening to 'lost legendary tapes'! Remarkable are songs with 'honky tonk piano'' or an acoustic guitar/piano duet or a didgeridoo, a wide range of instruments that makes this CD to an intersesting one, especially for the Floyd and Waters fans.
