Anthropia biography
ANTHROPIA is essentially a one-man band and the brainchild of guitarist Hugues "Hugo" Lefebvre.Hugo studied classical guitar and theory at "école de musique d'Antibes" (a music academy in Antibes, France),while in high school he was introduced to Iron Maiden and then bands like Dream Theater and Symphony X and they had a profound effect on him and his music.

Hugo wanted to write an album based on a fantasy story written by his good friend Quentin Borderie. He realized he couldn't capture the many nuances of the story with one album and decided to record a trilogy of albums to tell the tale.Hugo decided to call his band ANTHROPIA(The title of the band references, in part, mankind's awareness of its divine origins -- its place in the grand scheme -- and the beauty and complexity of the universe.) For the first installment,Hugo spent a year writing and recording compositions at his home studio on the French Riviera, the result of which is "The Ereyn Chronicles Part 1".

Here is a brief synopsis of the story line, used from Anthropia's website:

The fictional universe of Ereyn, ruled by queen Lunne, has sunk into chaos and disarray. The old ways have been forgotten, and the road to redemption - an ancient wisdom that has been buried for ages - is lost. (A situation exacerbated by minions of the dark counterworld Empyr.) With aid, the main character, the young Amryl, must search for the all-knowing oracle in order to save his misguided people. However, he soon becomes a victim of a near-fatal shipwreck and is separated from his search party. His boat is in ruins and so is his life: Amryl suffers from amnesia and can't remember who he is. Suddenly, an expansive search for truth and knowledge transforms into a mission of self-discovery. "The hero of the story is not a mighty warrior and doesn't wield a mighty sword," explains Hugo. "He's young and naïve. He doesn't know a lot of things about the world, but by the end of [the story] that all changes."

With some help from drummer Damien Rinaud and featuring guest vocalists,ANTHROPIA released the first chapter in the trilogy,"The Ereyn Chronicles Part 1" in 2006.The album,to quote " buzzes with flashes of IRON MAIDEN'S gritty conceptual metal,Dave Mustaine/MEGADETH lightning-speed riffing,DREAM THEATER'S sweeping storytelling,YNGWIE MALMSTEEN'S neo-classical minor-scale mining,The Lamb Lies Down On Broadway-era GENESIS atmospherics,KANSAS' busy symphonic boogie-rock, classical guitar beauty an...

3 stars Anthropia is a respected progressive metal band from France in last years . With two albums under their belt they gan reputation in prog metal circles. Second release from 2009 named The chain reaction proves that they mean bussines in this field. The music is something between Dream Theater, Adagio (from this french prog metal band comes as guest the keyboard player Kevin Codfert) and here and there some Malmsteen fast guitar moves, overall Anthropia manage to come with a pleasent , complicated type of prog metal. I like it, specially the instrumental sections are killer like on Whipping Soul, The Altar Of Trust or The Tree of Life, very complex prog metal with nice tempo changes and great keyboards, Yann Mouhad the guitarist is impressive. Also the duo female/male vocal lines works very well, both have pleasent voices, Nathalie Olmi in particular fits perfect here. All in all a band to watch in the future, definetly among the best prog metal bands France ever head so far. 3.5 stars for sure. Great art work and booklet..

3 stars Splendid, this one really managed to talk with me (metaphorically said, we talked about metal screaming, power metal, concept albums and metal guitar solos). This album really has everything that proper prog album should have. Except these things, it also managed to get through my little depression and let me embrace prog metal. Most important thing is that they're approaching to this crossover of prog metal and power metal with unique style. They're simply making it interesting, feeling new by combining old, trusty parts with new elements. And it works, you feel like you're listening "full" music. It's wild and energetic, but not cheap and noisy (even it's quite loud, due to power metal attributes). But that's just promising beginning, later on, it turns out that they don't offer too much and these wonderful and innovative ideas are repeating. That's bad (I've tried to track my first listen as I was changing my mind). They're literally losing power as album goes by.

3(-) with sad heart, because start of this was promising. I gave it a chance later on, but it's still the same.

4 stars A very promising first album for this band. Hugo the leader is the one without who this album would not exist: music, lyrics, vocals, guitar, bass, keyboards... The result is impressive : death metal (Megadeath-like) mixed with touches of progressive music.

I recommend this album for those who appreciate bands like Angra, Symphony X or Iron Maiden.

4 stars This band definatly deserves attention. I'm suprised that the album is not rated. It is a bit on the heavy side, some classical vocals, but where to put it and with what band to compare it. Difficult. Vocals maybe Fates Warning with a twist of Halford. Qua music maybe a little bit of Tiles, Mob Rules, Evergray. All in all not a bad buy. Deserves more spins in the cd player.
