Toupidek Limonade biography
TOUPIDEK LIMONADE is another French group who's members spanned from Hellebore. The band formed in the early '80's, rumoured some time around 1984, by three likely suspects: Jean Caël, Kwettap Ieuw, and Denis Tagu. "In greenlander Toupidek refers to small statues that are sculptured in whale bones and that represents sea monsters with magical powers; of course Limonade means the juicy bubble drink !"* The bands keen sense of humour transfers to both their music and album titles, with their debut taking a play on words to Hellebore's soul album.

Their quirky compositions are inspired by dreams, revolving around rule-less meanderings that find themselves in surprisingly concise territory. Composed by a hybrid of traditional instruments and child's play things the mainly shorter pieces are accompanied by off-kilter lyrics that touch upon important world issues such as "pataphysical mother goose rhymes"* Their sound straddles RIO groups like Etron Fou, Pascal Comelade crossed with minimalist aesthetics. Interestingly the band held connections with David Willey & Jeanne Christensen; two members of Avant-prog groups 5UU's and Hamster Theater.

TOUPIDEK LIMONADE will not to be everyones cup of tea. The fanatical followers of the light hearted Euro RIO branches should find wealths to love here. Recommended to lovers of playful and humourous.

Review by toroddfuglesteg

3 stars I have to admit I feel like Bambi on ice when trying to describe this album.

I interviewed this band last week and the interview was good. It seems like the band went to Greenland in hunt for penguins and missed penguins by 10 000 miles or so. That pretty much describe this music too which is a mad collection of chamber orchestra RIO pieces intertwined by some strange male choirs and female vocals. Total mental asylum in my ears.

...... but their music actually work. The music is very pastoral at times and very cleverly put together. There are some piano pieces here which is very clever in their own right. The male vocals is a bit disturbing mental, but they too works. This album is very much in the Euro avant-garde theatrical tradition and very French. French as in the same tradition as Jaques Brel and Ange too.

This album is actually a good music experience. The sound is good too. I would not label this a great album, but it works fine and I like it. It is a good album.

3 stars
