Replikas biography
Greatly mixing avant-prog, eclectic, heavy rock, post-rock...
...to start with!
REPLIKAS is a quite popular and appreciated modern rock band from Turkey, with an incredible artistic perception, oriented on progressive rock, alternative, world and improvisational music. Their musical start might have been p(f)unk-related and underground, but the band took a professional distance from weak & "independent" styles soon after, impressing first of all with their music and vision, a thing leveled, afterwards, by their albums, both succesfully and intriguingly.
REPLIKAS celebrate 15 years of activity this year (2008), despite an unbelievable gap between 1993, their rising year, and 2000, when their debut was printed out. In the firstmentioned year, guitarist and singer Göyce Akçelik, (lead)guitarist Barkin Engin and percussionist Orçun Bastürk got together and founded REPLIKAS. Bassist Selçuk Artut joined in 1998, while Özer Yalçinkaya (samplers) completed the original quintet two years later; he was replaced by Burak Tamer, presumably after the band's second album, released in 2002 (since Yalçinkaya was still credited as a member during the creation of it).
Local gigs at nightclubs, perhaps even small festivals, and such forms of activity, were REPLIKAS' main way of exposure during the first years, long before signing with record labels. They got closer, nonetheless, to European reception, when chosen to participate in the Mediterranean Young Artist's Biennal, in 1999. Other steps forward into popularity were collaborations and opening concert acts.
Three main studio albums crown, so far, REPLIKAS' efforts. Köledoyuran was recorded in just 15 days, in 2000. It's an authentic "eclectic" album, ranging from alternative to the essential bits of traditional or cultural spices. Two magazines reviewed it as the year's "Best Türkish Album", but the critics in general were sensational. Given both the success and the music, it's clear REPLIKAS' long awaited debut was a hit, staying that way even these days, while the next projects already had to meet high expectations. Dadaruhi, recorded in 2001 but released in 2002, seems to answer to that (being even considered Köledoyuran's opposite, musically). Heavily conceptual, with a lot of guest musicians and a chorus, it continues the blend of styles, especially the headlined "mix", adding electronic elements to the chemistry, but also traditional instrume...Greatly mixing avant-prog, eclectic, heavy rock, post-rock...

Heavily conceptual, with a lot of guest musicians and a chorus, it continues the blend of styles, especially the headlined "mix", adding electronic elements to the chemistry, but also traditional instruments (ney, zuma, Ramadan drum). The third album is called Avaz, released in 2005 (on Doublemoon, instead of ADA Müzik, like the previous times); a third change seems to happen: it contains enjoyable and intricate rock music, while adding the touch of improvisation and psyched effects, things that aren't new at all, instead sound very powerful.
Soundtracks and documentary music complement these achievements, three projects being notable: Maruf OST (2001), Two Girls OST (2005) (awarded) and Crossing The Bridge: The Sound Of Istabul (2006). The two soundtracks were also compiled, recently. In addition, REPLIKAS also released The Vegetable Man 10 Project - A Tribute To Syd Barrett in 2003.
Influences are noted to be CAN, FAUST, Sonic Youth, Okay Temiz, Anadolu Rock musicians, Syd BARRETT (especially for Akçelik) and Turkish Sufi (Mevlevi & Alevi). Besides their main styles, we can add the "fusion" of classic & modern instruments, "Arabesque", Sufi or "tekke" influences, folk, indie-pop, experimental/abstract/minimalistic music, space & psychedelic rock...
As a diverse note, Barkin Engin and Burak Tamer are founders of a side-project called Reverie Falls On All. Engin also collaborated on an album by Burhan Öcal.
