Rich Casey biography
Rich CASEY is a Boston, USA based guitarist and keyboard-player; of which little is known to date. For the last few years he's been highly prolific, releasing 3 studio albums - "No Way Out" in 2006, "House of Cards" in 2007 and "Shadowblack" in 2008. The albums make out a musical concept the artist has coined "The Melancholy trilogy".

The albums are mostly instrumental; but with a few select contributions from Bostan-based vocalist Gabrielle AGACHIKO on each release; most profound in the second part of this trilogy. Other musical guests on his releases are Boston-based drummer Steve CHAGGARIS on the first album and members of tribute band PINK VOYD.

WHY IS THIS ARTIST LISTED AT PROGARCHIVES:
US-based musician and composer Rich CASEY started out as a guitarist influenced by Tommy Iommi, but after some time discovered GENESIS. Casey ventures out to other musical territories from time to time, but the symphonic keyboard explorations influenced by GENESIS in general and Tony BANKS in particular is a constant feature; in a style and manner which saw to it that Casey's inclusion to the database was approved by the Neo Progressive team - mostly due to the contents of his 2008 release "Shadowblack".

4 stars Rich Casey's second album "House Of Cards" is a huge leap forward from his excellent first album. This new CD has less instrumentals, with more vocals by guest Gabrielle Agachiko; her dulcet tones lend more credibility to the melodies. The songs are more structured for the most part, with little of the '80's new age synth blips and bleeps which appeared on the first album. There are also less obvious references to Genesis than before; some traces still exist: there are a couple of nods to Nursery Cryme era organ, and some Wind & Wuthering string stylings, but for the most part, Casey has come into his own sound. It's heavily keyboarded: even drum samples are not used in many songs- percussive synth chords take over instead. Symphonic in nature, the melodies tend to be melancholic, and are easily remembered, with lots of mellotron-styled samples. All in all, another album which demands to be heard frequently. I'm already looking forward to the next one.

3 stars Boston-based American composer and multi-instrumentalist Rich Casey entered the prog scene suddenly around mid-00's with a brief but prolific production of albums. His first one ''No way out'' was indepedently released in 2006, a work recorded between autumn 05' and winter 06' at 7A West Studios in Charlestown, Boston.Casey handles all guitars, keyboards, drum programming and bass synths, while he receives little help by guest musicians in drums, sax and vocals.

To try to fully describe Casey's debut is something like a bet, as the artist explores so many musical paths in ''No way out'', that is impossible to come up with a short description. This fact hurts the album's consistency but at the same time Casey's ideas are way too interesting to just skip them. His base seems to be Electronic/Synth Rock, adding to the mixture elements from Classic Prog, Symphonic Rock, Lounge Jazz and New Age.Note that the album is all instrumental except for one vocal track (''Just Another Day'').The majority of Casey's ideas are heavily driven by the massive synth/organ explorations and piano paces with series of cosmic, elegant and sonic soundscapes. He often enriches them with his decent guitar playing, either in a heavy mold, much in the vein of COSMOGRAF or DARWIN'S RADIO, or with smooth acoustic themes and more intense symphonic leanings, not unlike early GENESIS.On the later tracks his music obtains a more Electronic approach with groovy drum programming and stronger synth work in the style of SHAMALL, but even so it remains quite inspired. And of course some pieces are exclusively based on his synths with a lovely, spacey and unique atmosphere.

Quality instrumental Electronic Prog/Rock by an unknown but talented artist and an excellent purchase both for massive listenings and background music.Warmly recommended.

3 stars Third release by US-based artist Rich Casey here, and an aptly named album it is.

Dark, atmospheric explorations is the name of the game here. Symphonic layers with a focus on mood exploration in mostly slow paced compositions is the main feature throughout, more often than not setting up multiple layered pompous sonic tapestries with one dominating and one or two additional underscoring melodic layers.

Bass and drums provide rhythms, acoustic and electric guitars are added sparingly; the latter mostly in the form of atmospheric guitar soloing.

Nothing really complex on this production though; but fans of symphonic rock inspired by Genesis of old, and in particular those enjoying music in this style at the most lush and mellow, may find this one intriguing. Especially if dark, melancholic moods are of general interest.

Thanks to windhawk for the artist addition.
