Fluttr Effect biography
US outfit FLUTTR EFFECT was formed late in 2002, at the onset named Fluttr. Troy Kidwell (guitars, vocals) and Vessela Stoyanova (marimba) is the creative nucleus of the outfit, and joining them for the formation were J. Marchionna (drums) and Valerie Thompson (cello).

Soon after they found Kara Trott (vocals), and with her firmply in place as a member the band set upon developing their highly adventurous take on art rock; at first blending traditional heavy metal elements with Bulgarian and Irish folk music. Later on facets of further stylistic expressions would be added to their sonic palette, resulting in a band pretty eclectic and hard to place in any genre or genre subset.

The four-track EP Fluttr from 2003 was the first creation of the band, and in 2004 their first full length production Trithemis Festiva followed.

In 2005 the band opted for a name change; and their first venture under the new moniker Fluttr Effect was the EP Swallows and Sparrows issued the same year. In 2006 their so far latest effort was issued, the full length album Marking Time.

Although never an act exploring mainstream teritories in their musical endeavours, Fluttr Effect has been given quite a lot of positive press over the years, and remain a popular live act in their native Boston.

3 stars A trully unusual US band from Boston, Fluttr Effect started at the dawn of the millenium simply as Fluttr, led by guitarist Troy Kidwell and marimba player Vessela Stoyanova.Drummer J Marchionna and cellist Valerie Thompson completed the original line-up, soon to be joined by singer Kara Trott.A 4-track eponymous EP was the first work by the group in 2003, followed a year later by their first full-length, independent release ''Trithemis festiva'', at the time when the group still carried the Fluttr name.

As already said, Fluttr Effect are a strange group, considering the unusual instrumentation and the different, unrelated styles, appearing in their debut album, and if a label could describe them this would be Modern Art Rock. The unusual material starts off with the blend of edgy, heavy guitar riffs and solos with Chamber-like string arrangements, creating grandiose textures in a very modern way.But there are also elements from Jazz, Electronic and Ethnic Music to be found in this album, depending on the track, offering a really flexible and artistic work of its own character. The constant use of marimba next to the dynamic guitar work adds another charming dimension. The majority of the instrumental parts are really adventurous, often with an experimental KING CRIMSON-eque vibe mixed with nice Heavy Prog tunes, but the band manages to offer in general accesible and refined arrangements through the use of memorable choruses and the tapping heavier grooves.Kara Trott and her highly expressive voice is another reason to listen to this album.Really hard to end up with a succesful description.Maybe a cross between KARNATAKA, THE GATHERING and PAATOS would seal the deal, but again this album needs to be heard to be correctly appreciated.

This is definitely a group and an album with a personal style, which simultaneously is quite enjoyable.Very intricate musicianship wrapped in smaller, memorable packages.Strongly recommended...3.5 stars.

4 stars US-based band Fluttr Effect will take you on a trip into lands of weird darkness on their release "Marking Time".

With cello and percussion utilized as central instruments, electric guitar played in a variety of styles and just as often to convey effect as to provide melody, the soundscapes here really are something else.

The general mood and atmosphere here is dark and creepy - and even the odd moments of lighter whimsiness to be heard in places will in the span of a song turn to something ...darker...

Musically this release is kind of all over the place. And it takes concentration and some dedication listening through this one as well, at least the first couple of times.

Still, this release is highly recommended for the eclectily inclined and fans of experimental rock.

Thanks to windhawk for the artist addition.
