Spirits of the Dead biography
Norwegian band SPIRITS OF THE DEAD was formed in ealry 2007 by Ole Øvstedal (guitars) and Ragnar Vikse (vocals), with Geir Thorstensen (drums) and Deadly Nightshade (bass, keyboards) soon joining the band to complete the line-up.

As soon as the band was settled they booked recording time in Crystal Cavern Studio to cut a demo tape, which they brought with them while performing live all over Europe. A direct result of that initial effort was to be picked for a gig at the NXNE in Toronto, Canada.

Next up for this new act was to record an actual, official debut album. The final effort was issued locally in the fall of 2008 as Spirits of the Dead, and was released internationally in early 2009. This initial effort sports 7 compositions, and was mastered in New York by George Marino, known for his work with Led Zeppelin and Jimi Hendrix.

4 stars Spirits of the Dead is yet another band jumping on to the retro-movement, and just like so many others they do it with style and finesse. Lacking in originality perhaps, but rich in mood and atmosphere.

The Who and The Doors were the first bands I started thinking about when listening to this venture, but after the opening track more of the former than the latter. With psychedelic tinges added in that is, and at times with some indie rock flavours REM style thrown in for good measure as well as more pastoral sounding folk-tinged elements.

For the final tune some moments more similar to Black Sabbath are added in as well, and overall we're actually dealing with a pretty diversified effort here in terms of stylistic expressions. But with a solid and distinct foundation in vintage sounding sonic tapestries.

One to check out if you miss the music of the late 60's and early 70's, in particular if psychedelic tinged as well as harder sounding material is of interest.

Thanks to windhawk for the artist addition.
