Imahoritsuneoyoshidatatsuya biography
Imahoritsuneoyoshidatatsuya is yet another manifestation of the prolific Japanese drummer Tatsuya Yoshida. This time he has paired with Tipographica's guitarist Tsuneo Imahori. Yoshida is well known as the drummer for Ruins, Koenjihyakkei, Korekyojin and Daimonji, to name just a few of his numerous projects. Although mention of the band Tipographica may draw a sigh of joy from many an avant-prog fan, Imahori is generally much less well known. Some of his other musical credits are his work on Otomo Yoshihide's Cathode, on Third Person's 1990 album Trick Moon, as well as the composition of numerous anime soundtracks. Imahori's less sizable resume does not at all reflect a compositional/improvisational skill or a technical prowess which in any way does not match that of Yoshida - both are consummate masters of their art.

Imahoritsuneoyoshidatatsuya has released two albums on the Doubt Music label (Japan). Their first, Territory, was released in 2006; their second, Dot, in 2008. The music of the duo is exceedingly intense and hard hitting, [referred to by one listener as "bludgeoning"]. They've succeeding in filling the space with such an immensity of dense sound that one double-takes, and has to remind oneself that this is the production of naught but a duo. Imahoritsuneoyoshidatatsuya's music is well spiced with metal/math's over-the-top wall of sound sensibility - albiet a much more complex one than an average experience of metal might infer. Speed, power, sharp composition and inspired improv - all graced with the prog hallmarks of exceptional playing and the use of frequent time signature changes which shift on a dime; elements propelling ever further Imahoritsuneoyoshidatatsuya's fierce and consuming sound as it sweeps over one like a tempest. At times their music seems almost inescapable it overwhelms the aural space so, flowing through one like a narcotic - an experience often verging on sensory overload. Nonetheless, there are moments of respite, moments in which they seem to step back, to stretch out and allow the listener to breathe along with them, as if in preparation for the onslaught which undoubtedly lies ahead.

3 stars Every Japanese prog researcher will meet the name of drummer Yoshida Tatsuya very often - at least he played in most well-known Japanese zeuhl/avant bands as Ruins,Koenji Hyakkei and Koenjihyakkei.

In this, less known project, he collaborates with guitarist Tsuneo Imahori. "DOTS" is second album of this project. As always with Yoshida you never know what to expect from his every new release. Then, I will help you - expect radical noise avant guitar and drums hardcore. High energy attack of very fast, technical and aggressive, but rounded at the same time, metal-like sound. With doze of psychedelia, characteristic Japanese noisy industrial compositions. Without melodies or structure, but with self-irony presented.

Nearest call will be Zorn's hardcore projects - Naked City and Painkiller, but Japanese duet has not jazzy roots. Few compositions are brilliant, some interesting, others - more chaotic cacophony.

I believe this album could attract radical technical avant metal/noise hardcore fans, Yoshida's collectors and Japanese avant researchers. All others possibly will hate the album as non-musical noise. Still interesting work for dedicated listener.
