Al Basim biography

Iraqi musician Al-Basim (Basim Al-Hashimi) was born in Baghdad. He discovered his passion for guitar and start his first musical steps there, and formed his first group in 1970. He left for USA in 1978, and record 'Revival' one later later, an obscure gem of prog rock music according to a number of musical sources.

He returned to the music career in late 90's in France (allegedly convinced by some members of The Gypsy Kings). In 2006, he released 'Songs From Iraq', acoustic-oriented album comprised of Middle-Eastern poems in flamenco-world music arrangements.

The album 'Revival' is highly eclectic mix of psychedelic prog textures, jazz-rock, avantgarde, and Middle-Eastern music.

Al Basim Eclectic Prog

4 stars An obscure pearl from Iraq. Al Basim (Basim Al Hashimi) recorded this album "Revival" in USA back in 1979 with fellow musicians but considering the time and origin its commercial appeal had to be very limited. The all instrumental music is a rich tapestry of sounds, where Basim's guitar, flute and sax are the prominent instruments. Ethnic influences from Arabic traditions and free Jazz overtones here and there, make this a gem. It reminds the 60's california psychedelic group Kaleidoscope and many 70's Krautrock bands especially Yatha Sidhra ( A Meditation Mass ). Best songs are the orgiastic " History of the World " and the ethereal " Poitiers ". Fans of the aforementioned groups will adore this. A solid 4 stars and a must from Iraq.
