Hypno5e biography
Formed in Montpellier, France in 2003

French experi-metalists HYPNO5E create a progressive metal / art rock onslaught that can truly be called the future of metal. Also being professionals in film, the genius within HYPNO5E mixes in video concept showing an all around approach to the arts, both musically and visually. Playing many characters at its finest, HYPNO5E's signature sound paints the picture with such textures and color, and has been said by the press to expand metal into unimaginable dimensions. The Cleveland Free Times described the album as "a testament to range and musicianship", while Time Out New York says "HYPNO5E juxtaposes technical, dissonant metal with pretty abstraction". Countless time changes, mood swings from haunting to hopeful, and some of the deepest grinding extreme metal tones on the low end build up this open minded monster. While the French metal scene has been exploding as of late, HYPNO5E is still one creating their own trend since forming in 2003.

Fresh off their US headlining Metal As Art Tour alongside Revocation (Relapse Records) and The Binary Code, HYPNO5E has a plan for world domination. Having toured extensively throughout the US, Canada, Asia, and Europe, including a mini Euro Tour with The Ocean (Metal Blade), HYPNO5E has already made themselves a name to remember.

From start to finish, Des Deux L'une Est L'Autre (English translation: "Of The Two, One Is The Other") captures the audience with their stunning vision. The album mirrors life?s highs and lows, and aesthetically is a tribute to the arts. From the stunning metal assaults in Tutuguri to the epic and moving journey of Scarlet Fever, the monster within HYPNO5E attacks in many ways. Their power is well distributed and technicality blends with a mood so deep, the virtuosity of it all is seen in concept. HYPNO5E makes you live every music note as an emotion, every emotion becoming a picture in your head, and every concept becoming an interpretation of life.

In relation to the music, HYPNO5E's live performance consists of custom video projection and movie archives (see pic below), where samples, effects, and the raw power and energy of the band showcase an unforgettable night. HYPNO5E?s can be labeled both progressive and epic, blending all styles of metal with open minded perfection. The future is HYPNO5E...

Alba - Les Ombres Errantes
Hypno5e Experimental/Post Metal

Review by mitarai_panda

4 stars Hypno5e is an experimental/post metal band from Montpellier, France, established in 2003. Their music is considered to be all-in-one with the visual arts, because the band's personnel are also professionals in the film industry. Their idea is to combine sound and space imagination, give it an abstract meaning, and make music technical and Deep emotions come together, and albums are mostly concept albums. The theme is the interpretation of life. During the band's performance, video and movies are often projected to show the power of image and music. Since 2007, four albums have been released. This year's new "Alba - Les Ombres Errantes" has a full 75 minutes long, which is actually a complete soundtrack for the band's guitarist. Listening to the opening song does not have any metallic taste. Instead, it is folk and psychedelic, some pf, but the English in French sounds awkward. It only shows the heavy side until the end. Because it is a film soundtrack, there will be many narrations and dialogues in the songs (returning back to French). I think this will affect musicality to a certain extent, but there is no way to do it. In addition, some of the melody of folk music, plus most of them are solo acoustic guitar, so it seems to have a small fresh flavor and exotic style, and the voice of the lead singer is also very open (reverberation use much?), In other words, some of the experimental sound effects show that they are different. I think if you remove these monologues, you can have four stars. At present, between Samsung's half and four stars, you can hear it.

4 stars "Cinematic metal" with all of the requisite djenty guitar power chords, machine gun bass drumming and male vocal screams/growls, yet interlaced within and between are plenty of soft, atmospheric, and even ambient sections--over which voice samples from a wide variety of languages are often on display. Interesting, surprising, and well recorded.

Favorite tracks: If Pink Floyd went metal we might get something like, "III. West Shore: Where We Lost the Ones" (10:31) (9/10) and insistent "V. Central Shore: Tio" (5:26) which is sung emotionally in Spanish (9/10).

Also good: the dreamy piano-based opener, "I. East Shore: Landscape in the Mist" (1:42) (8/10), the TUNE Lucid Moments-like "VI. North Shore: The Abstract Line" (6:56) (8/10), and; "VIII. The South Shore: Blind Man's Eye" (15:10) (8/10).

I found myself often reminded of the brilliant 2011 album Lucid Moments by Poland's TUNE while listening to this. Despite the growls and heavy sections (which are actually in the minority) this album is well worthy of repeated listens. Four stars.
