Löbo biography
Löbo is an instrumental post-metal band from Portugal, formed in the end of 2007 by Joăo VAIRINHOS (drums), Luís PESTANA (guitars) and Ricardo REMÉDIO (synths). They debuted live in September 2008 and have played regularly on stage, joined on bass by Renato SOUSA till late 2009, and later on by Pedro BARCÉLO. Their live reputation secured them an opening slot for WOLVES IN THE THRONE ROOM in Porto Rio. They were also special guests in MEN EATER's second album release tour.

The Portuguese band succeeds in bringing something new and musically unique to the post-metal scope. Taking elements from crushing doom metal as well as post-rock (GYBE, MONO), they create a heavy, lush and spacious sound, very atmospheric in a Floydian way, but also open to sounds and rhythms from trip hop and electronic music.

The entity debuted in 2008 with 'Dânaca', an impressive 16-minute metallic trip. Their first official release, the 35 minute 'Älma EP', took another step towards their own identity, mixing metal, electronic and ambient. In 2010 the single 'Nöite' follewed.

Löbo Experimental/Post Metal

3 stars Löbo is a Portuguese instrumental post-metal band, you could almost say they are post-rock as the sonic experimentation and spacious atmosphere is more upfront then the metal. Think GYBE, but with more psychedelic effects, a slowed down heavy pace and the sporadic crushing doom metal chord.

With only 4 tracks, the album clocks in at 36 minutes, which is quite short but still preferable to something of twice that length without the ideas to make up for it. Track 1 is an excellent one to sample, featuring their trademark Floydian post-metal sound, very spacious and subtle, but with enough heaviness to please your metal triggers. Track 2 continues the same pace and tone but features synths, sound effects and feedback only. Track 3 and 4 are lush with effects, feedback, Floydian guitar picks and those slow crushing chords again, even with something sounding like a farfisa organ and other synths joining the soundscape.

Very promising debut from this young band that can only be described as post-metal but that still voided all post-metal clichés quite successfully. Recommended. 3.5 stars.
