Dead Voices On Air biography
Dead Voices On Air (DVOA) is the main musical project of Briton native Mark Spybey. Spybey is a veteran of the electronic scene, having been in Zoviet France from 1987 to 1989. He started DVOA in 1992, when he moved to Canada from Britain. Mr. Spybey has also worked with such highly acclaimed muscians and bands such as Krautrock powerhourses, Can, Dieter Moebius, and Michael Rother, and also Damo Suzuki, and Jarboe. The music of DVOA has been coined panambiance. The sound is acheived through processed sound, improvision, and cut-up techniques, then layered together to create ever evolving organic, ambient sound, sometimes harsh, sometimes soft and floating.

How Hollow Heart...
Dead Voices On Air Progressive Electronic

4 stars Dead Voices On Air is usually just Mark Spybey (former Zoviet-France member) but "How Hollow Heart...", 1997, adds a small collective of performers, even some abstract/voices.

Best attribute, its minimalism in each of its five, somehow connected, tracks, which enhances its transparent and highly creative spirit, therefore its music composition. All due to the fact that each member provides, in a wide open space (DVOA as usual), a myriad of attractive melody lines, noises, voices, moods and atmospheres which counterpoint themselves into an unknowing, exciting, deep and joyful, slow paced, drone like, exotic dream/nightmarish sonic trip.

What else can I say? For Prog/Electronics followers mostly and other curious prog-cats.

****4 PA stars.

3 stars "Anchorage", 2015, a live recorded performance (no applauses registered) by Death Voices on Air is close, musically speaking, to the "dark ambient" and "drone" taggins.

About Mark Spybey a.k.a. Dead Voices On Air, well a short copied bio-

Mark Spybey has worked under the name of Dead Voices On Air (DVOA) for twenty years, following his departure from Zoviet- France. He's released 15 albums and collaborated with an impressive list of people, including members of Can, Faust, Throbbing Gristle, Swans and others.

Here in this release he is accompanied by James Plokin (guitar) and Jim Coleman (keyboards).

As far as the listening experience goes, the eerie environments transfix into dream or nightmare like, cold and solitary, nostalgic sometimes oppresive melody lines with some voices in off, as some dark choruses here and there. The up-front performances are perfectly balanced by almost invisible detours and atmospheres that melt together from composition to composition (there are 8).

The musical language in this kind of projects, inherently focuses on creating sonic landscapes which should be as attractive as subtle, which makes it very difficult to outstand one musician (composer) from the other, unless of course you kind of started all this craze, like Brian Eno's self-titled "Ambient" recordings.

So it comes to listening patiently for this release to show its own proposals, but far more important, as it happened to me, to start the look out for more Dead Voices on Air albums.

***3.5 "close to 4" PA stars.

Thanks to philippe for the artist addition.
