Simeon Soul Charger biography
US band SIMEON SOUL CHARGER originally started out as the artistic moniker Alan Brooks used when he performed as a singer/songwriter. In 2008 he hooked up with Jim Garibaldi (bass), and after the twosome started writing and rewriting material together the thoughts about setting up a band project together started fermenting, eventually resulting in the recruitment of Joe Kidd (drums), studio member Kevin Bjerre (cello) and Caleb Dixon (guitars) for the bands first line-up. This initial version of the band hit the studio to record their debut EP "Simeon Soul Charger", which was released in early 2009.

Shortly after Dixon left the band, replaced by Rick Phillips (guitars). This slightly revamped version of the band recorded and released their second EP "All Rather Dead" in 2010. Following a short tour in Germany, bassist Garibaldi left the band due to creative differences. New man in was Spider Monkey (bass), initially as a short term replacement but he fitted well with the band and was soon a permanent member.

2011 saw the band release their full length debut album "Meet Me in the Afterlife" on the German Gentle Art of Music label, with an elongated stay in Germany following the release. Hundreds of concerts in Germany and Europe with recording sessions in between followed for the next 18 months or so. Joined in the studio sessions by Sandra Rieger (violin), Susi Salomon (violin), Friederike Seeßelberg (cello), Manfred Feneberg (percussion) and Claudio Vollino (harp) Simeon Soul Charger's second album "Harmony Square", an album long conceptual suite, was recorded in full in Germany and released in the fall of 2012, once again on the Gentle Art of Music label.

4 stars US quartet SIMEON SOUL CHARGER was formed in 2008, and following two initial self-released EPs the band signed with the German label Gentle Art of Music, which has released all the studio albums of this band to date. "A Trick of Light" is their third full-length production, and was issued in early 2015.

Simeon Soul Charger comes across as a well developed band with a sound and style that combine being distinctly vintage on one hand and fairly unique on the other. None of the different elements used can be described as novel I guess, but the sum of them adds up into something greater indeed. Progressive rock fans with a strong affection for vintage and presumably psychedelic rock from sometime around 1970 should try out this band for size. I suspect most of them will nod approvingly. In particular those amongst them who enjoy bands adding folk music elements to their material.

Review by TKristyna

4 stars The personal direction and '70s prog orientation of Simeon Soul Charger is pretty obvious since the first tones of 'Vedanta'. Wide guitar areas are colliding with decent licks and patterns, and it's all enhanced by very charismatic vocal expression of Aaron Brooks, the leader of Simeon Soul Charger. All songs are following each other, so the whole album is perfectly linked inside.

If I had to choose the best moments of this record, I would say 'God Lends a Hand', 'Though the Trees They Talk', both parts of 'Europe's Garden' and 'The Swallowing Mouth'. But as I already said, this album is amazing from the beginning to the end. It is a fusion of such a different influences - I hear a lot of Black Sabbath influenced stuff here, also something of Pink Floyd and bands like Queen, Cream and much more from late '60s and early '70s era.

It's more than just another 'retro' band on the scene (Rival Sons, Orchid etc.), it is the new, original way to go. And I simply love it. Recommendable stuff.

4 stars US quartet SIMEON SOUL CHARGER was formed in 2008, and released two initial EPs in quick succession following the formation. Then they signed to the German label Gentle Art of Music, which released their debut album "Meet Me in the Afterlife" in 2011 as well as their most recent production "Harmony Square" from September 2012.

Simeon Soul Charger's second album "Harmony Square" is an album that should appeal broadly. Fans of progressive rock and classic rock both should find lots to enjoy here, and in particular those amongst them with a soft spot for psychedelic flavored music. If a general description such as retro-oriented concept album with a foundation in late 60's to early 70's psychedelic progressive rock sounds intriguing, you are most likely a part of the core audience for this fine band.

Thanks to windhawk for the artist addition.
